E7 - Gritty Rants! - Should the Flyers Fear the Islanders?

Website: www.FlyersNittyGritty.com Twitter: @Ywolok (Yariv Wolok) The Philadelphia Flyers head into the second round for the first time in eight years. Having just beat the 8th ranked Montreal Canadiens, the Flyers showed a kink in their armor. The lower ranked Canadiens gave the first place Flyers a run for their money. Prior to the six game series, Flyers fans were flying high, daring any team in the NHL to match up against their red hot club. Today there seems to be more of a tentative optimism as the Flyers go into face the tenacious New York Islanders. Since Barry Trotz took over the Islanders head coaching job, the team has transcended their perpetual mediocrity and ascended to become a cup threat during the playoffs. While, the team boasts plenty of offensive and defensive talent, it's actually the overall team play that leads to the Islanders immediate success. That is what make them a true adversary. In the playoffs, hockey is a game of inches and the Islanders have proven to give centimeters. After sweeping the declining Washington Capitals, the Islanders come in with all the momentum they could ask for. However, this is not the same Philadelphia Flyers of the past that would be outmatched by a red hot team. The Flyers are very much capable of setting the tone in this series, as they have every bit of talent that of any of the teams in the Eastern Conference. They've also proven they are capable of being the best of those teams. In this Gritty Rant! Yariv Wolok (@ywolok) goes through why the Flyers should not be scared of the Islanders or any team in the NHL. If the Flyers want to prove they are the best, they should welcome a challenge from the best.

Created By: Yariv Wolok Twitter: @YWolok Music by: Jay Lubes (https://soundcloud.com/jay_lubes) Website: https://www.flyersnittygritty.com After an upsetting loss to diminutive Boston Bruins, the Philadelphia Flyers find themselves in uncharted territory. They're without six very key players and yet, still find themselves near the top of the division standings, with games in hand. In these scenarios, the initial instinct is always to panic, but this year the Flyers have bought themselves some space. Without a perfect season, the Flyers never wavered and have found ways to gain points early on. With several key injuries early and two to three weeks of COVID complications, the team is still scoring and winning close games. In addition, the special teams have been an absolute mess at several stages of the early season and yet, this also has not stopped the Flyers from winning key games. If you exclude the four losses to the Boston Bruins, the Flyers would only have one loss in regulation and statistically would tell a different tale. With all of these weird trends, its fair for most people to be hesitant to see it continue. However, it's important to look at what this team is overcoming. That even without the perfect scenario, they still find a way to compete and win. Things have been improving and right before the COVID stoppage it was noticeable. Now with the recent success of Phantoms leading scorer Zayde Wisdom, we could see some additional talent join the big squad sooner than expected to help fill the void. Time will tell if the Flyers are as confident as Wisdom plays on the ice. On this episode of Gettin Gritty Wit It, I welcome back guest Lance Green (@lngbassist39) on the show to talk about the Flyers' recent COVID break and what they will need to do going forward to be successful.
