Football fans are calling this the worst goalkeeper performance in penalty shootout historyā¦ David Raya went 0 for 5 vs Manchester United earlier this week, guessing the wrong direction every single time. However, heās not aloneāin the last two decades, penalty conversion rates have risen from 74% all the way to 90% this season. But.. Why? š³ Experts claim penalty takers are improving, but I looked at the stats. Truth is, goalkeepers are just getting worse. This season, 95 of 106 penalties were scored in the Premier League alone. I looked at their techniqueāand this isnāt too surprising. A study of 286 shootouts found that GKās save just 10% of penalties when diving left or right. The best technique is to remain standing until the ball is kicked, then react. This approach yielded a save-rate of 39%, but itās almost never used. Goalkeeper in the Prem dove early 102 times, and the 4 they didnāt? They guessed itād go down the middle, which is literally never did. The result? The Demise of the Knuckleball
For a brief period, the "Knuckleball" technique broke football, but absolutely nobody could understand why... All of a sudden, balls were swerving chaotically through the air, making it near-impossible for goalkeepers to react. This turned into such a problem that Adidas called in NASA, who determined what was happening after running some tests. Turns out, soccer balls had gotten so round that they couldn't grip the air, resulting in a phenomenon called drag crisis (AKA--the Knuckleball.) I'll level with you--this is my absolute favorite technique in football, however, FIFA disagreed. They determined the balls were giving players an unfair technological advantage, which resulted in a major design change from Adidas... For the 2014 World Cup, they increased the panel count, deepened the seams, and added a bumpy texture (similar to a golf ball.) The result? Less round balls = less knuckle, and less knuckle = better flight. To this day, this is how footballs are produced, which is why--in the modern game--true knuckleballs are extremely rare.
