FA TROPHY HIGHLIGHTS | Sutton Coldfield Town 2 - 3 Dereham Town | Non-League Football

Record breaking Magpies returned from their long trip to Sutton Coldfield with a thrilling cup win and the prize of reaching the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy for the first time in their history. Sutton had the first strike on goal in the 5th minute when Reece Leek’s firm 25 yarder forced Elliott Pride into a good full length save. Dereham took time to adapt on the home side’s 3G pitch. Rhys Logan turned inside well and put Jacob Lay through but again his run into the box was thwarted. Logan had started brightly and won a corner on the right which was cleared. In the 25th minute, the Magpies gained a free kick midway in the Sutton half. Logan curled a superb ball towards the penalty spot where Toby Hilliard moved across his marker to head home and give Dereham the lead. Edwin Ahenkorah found space in the visitors box but Matt Castellan made a timely block. Fellow centre back Tomas Snapkauskas intercepted a home attack and found Logan who went on another penetrating forward run. The Magpies were good value for their interval lead. Dereham increased their lead minutes after the break. Castellan released Hilliard on the right who’s excellent deep cross was headed back across goal by Luke Johnson to Jacob Lay who opened his Dereham account in good style from close range. Adam Gusterson’s side were now playing with confidence with David Hinton and Luke Johnson moving the ball well. In the 65th minute Jason Dodd got through with only Pride to beat but the Dereham keeper stood his ground well and made a vital save. However, Sutton Coldfield won a corner on the right in the 71st minute. Ryan Moore’s delivery into the danger area was well met by James Beresford who used his strength to head home and reduce the deficit. Dereham replied with Hilliard and Logan exchanging passes well in the box before the former was denied by home keeper Lewis Gwilliams. Play was now open and Pride raced from his area to head clear. Sutton equalised in the 84th minute when Ryan Shaw slotted home Reece Leek’s cross from the left. Pride made a fine save from another Shaw header on time. In the final minute of added time, a defender needlessly punched a Logan corner to concede a penalty. Rhys Logan stepped up and confidently drilled home from the spot to win Dereham the tie with the final kick of the game. We now await the draw for the next round which will be made Monday 19th October at 1pm. The tie will be played on 31st October, meaning that our scheduled league game against Grays Athletic will be postponed. The attention turns back to the league for now, when we entertain Coggeshall Town Saturday 24th October at Aldiss Park - 3pm Kick Off.
