Halkett joined the Rangers at age 14 and initially played as a striker. During his development as a player, he was moved to defensive roles before being loaned out to Scottish League Two clubs Clyde and Berwick Rangers. Craig Halkett also played for the Under-19 Scotland team and in 2022 was called up for his first appearance for the senior Scotland team. After being released by Rangers, Halkett had over 100 appearances for Livingstone. He then joined Hearts FC in 2019 and suffered a knee injury in October of the same year. On 11 January 2022, Halkett signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract with Hearts FC, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2023–24 season. It was thought the 26-year-old centre-half would not make Saturday's Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park because of an ankle injury. It looked like he would need surgery after going off after 50 minutes of Hearts' semi-final win over Hibernian.
