Pakistan have been on the road for a few weeks now as they had travelled to Ireland for a three-match series recently. The Men in Green managed to clinch the bilateral series after losing the series opener. Pakistan are the only team left who haven’t announced their squad for the global event, set to be played in the Caribbean and the USA in June. They will look at the performances in the upcoming T20I series against England before deciding their final 15 for the multinational tournament. The returning Mohammad Amir failed to impress in the two matches that he played against Ireland. He bowled his full quota of four overs in both games but only managed to take two wickets and went for 76 runs. Hasan Ali played the final match of the series but he too proved to be expensive against a relatively inexperienced Ireland batting line-up. The medium pacer has been released from the squad on the eve of the series opener. Pakistan had to fight hard to get over the line against Ireland and would be keen to put on a better performance against England. For England, the biggest news was the comeback of their premier fast-bowler Jofra Archer. The right-arm quick had missed over 12 months of cricket due to an elbow injury. Some of the big names of England cricket, who were part of the Indian Premier League (IPL), have come back for the series against Pakistan as the hosts would look to make a statement before their title defence next month. All eyes will be on England’s skipper Jos Buttler who has not been in the best of form lately. In IPL 2024, he only managed to score 359 runs in 11 matches. All-rounder Liam Livingstone, who left the IPL midway due to an injury, is unlikely to start the series and Ben Duckett might play ahead of him. For the visiting team, their head coach Gary Kirsten has joined them in the United Kingdom after finishing his stint with the Gujarat Titans in the ongoing IPL. It will be a tough task for the Babar Azam-led side to take on a full strength English team in their own backyard.

The Mohammad Rizwan-led side has already sealed the series with a 2-0 unassailable lead, putting on two excellent performances, with the most recent one being a dominating 81-run win at the Newlands. The Proteas have been hurt even more with their pacers getting injured one by one. Ottneil Baartman is the latest entry on the injury list, and he has been ruled out of this third ODI due to a right knee injury. Titans fast bowler Corbin Bosch has been named as his replacement. Heinrich Klaasen has been the lone warrior for the hosts in both matches, with scores of 86 and 97, respectively. He was agonisingly close to a century at the Newlands. The Temba Bavuma-led unit has been looking to test their bench strength throughout this series, and that can be an excuse for their dismal performance. Still, it is a solid squad that has a plethora of match-winners. Saim Ayub's cracking century and Agha Salman's all-round show overshadowed a Klaasen special at the Boland Park, where the visitors held their nerves to win the thrilling series opener by three wickets. Abdullah Shafique was out for a duck in both the ODIs and to Marco Jansen. It would be a matter of concern for the management ahead of the Pink ODI. Saim Ayub got a start in the second game after returning Bavuma put the Men in Green to have a bat. Babar Azam and Rizwan rebuilt, both getting much-needed half-centuries. Agha Salman continued his excellent form, but it was Kamran Ghulam's whirlwind fifty that shifted the momentum completely and helped Pakistan to get a score that wasn't imagined early on. The tourists failed to play the entire 50 overs, but they hammered 329 before getting bundled with a ball remaining. Debutant Kwena Maphaka and Marco Jansen were taken to the cleaners, and they shared 7 wickets in the process. Bjorn Fortuin bowled a decent spell and grabbed a wicket, as did Andile Phehlukwayo. Fortuin walked off the field after finishing his bowling quota due to some hamstring concerns but did come to bat later in the game.

South Africa will face Pakistan in a do-or-die encounter at Newlands in the second ODI on Thursday (December 19). The visitors won the series opener on the last ball of the match, chasing 240. South Africa had to make a late change to their playing XI after the toss as Keshav Maharaj suffered a groin injury. He was replaced by Andile Phehlukwayo. The Proteas announced their Test squad for the upcoming series against Pakistan as well and Keshav Maharaj is part of it despite his injury concerns. Maharaj has been ruled out of the remainder of the ODI series and Bjorn Fortuin has been named as his replacement. David Miller, who missed the ODI series opener, is expected to feature in the second game. Captain Temba Bavuma too was rested for the first ODI as Aiden Markram was named the skipper. In the last match, South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first. Tony de Zorzi and Ryan Rickelton got the team off to a solid start. Agha Salman was the surprise package as he picked up four wickets in his first four overs to push the Proteas on the back foot.

Preview by AkshayaKrishna Polya The action shifts to the Highveld as South Africa meet Pakistan in the second T20I of the three-match series at SuperSport Park, Centurion, on Friday (December 13). The series opener at Kingsmead was nothing less than a tornado. It was one of those games in which individual brilliance had the final say over a collaborative effort. Heinrich Klaasen tasted success in his first match as a T20I captain as the Proteas held their nerves to thrash the Men in Green by 11 runs in a thrilling contest on Tuesday. The hosts didn't have the services of three crucial players in Durban - Ryan Rickelton (Deserved Break), Anrich Nortje (Injury) and Tabraiz Shamsi (Wasn't match-ready as he just arrived in the camp after completing his stint in Global Super League (GSL) as expected). Rickelton and Shamsi are expected to be included in the playing XI for this clash. Right-arm pacer Nortje has been ruled out of the remainder of the series due to a fractured left toe. Titans all-rounder Dayyaan Galiem has been named as his replacement. The Mohammad Rizwan-led side, on the other hand, dropped their vice-captain Salman Ali Agha from the XI for some reason and didn't have the result in their favour. It might have been for getting the team combination right, but he gives the side an extra bowling option. Not that Pakistan would have used him in the first T20I, as they completed 20 overs with only five bowlers, while Saim Ayub wasn't required.
