Transfer quarterback Zach Calzada's highlights from Texas A&M's win over Alabama

Auburn is adding a transfer quarterback from the SEC West for the second offseason in a row. The Tigers on Thursday landed a commitment from former Texas A&M quarterback Zach Calzada, new offensive coordinator Austin Davis announced in a post on his Instagram story. Calzada confirmed the announcement shortly thereafter on Twitter. Calzada joins T.J. Finley as quarterbacks to transfer to Auburn from within the SEC West since Bryan Harsin took over as head coach. Calzada appeared in 12 games for Texas A&M in 2021 as a redshirt sophomore, completing 56.1 percent of his passes for 2,185 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He took over the starting job for the Aggies following a season-ending leg injury to Haynes King early in the year. Calzada started 10 games for Texas A&M and led the team to an upset of Alabama -- the lone team to beat the Tide this season (pending the College Football Playoff final against Georgia). In that game, Calzada completed 67.7 percent of his passes and had career highs in passing yards (285) and touchdowns (three) while averaging 9.2 yards per pass attempt in a 41-38 win. “Really good,” Harsin said of Calzada in November, ahead of Auburn’s game at Texas A&M. “The guy can spin it, and he’s shown that. From what I’ve seen this guy’s a really good player. He’s got good vision, throws the ball well and does a good job of leading their offense.” A former three-star prospect out of Buford, Ga., Calzada entered the transfer portal in mid-December and recently took a visit to Auburn’s campus. Calzada’s addition to Auburn’s quarterback room gives the Tigers four scholarship quarterbacks heading into 2022, along with Finley, redshirt freshman Dematrius Davis and four-star signee Holden Geriner, who enrolls in classes this month. Following the transfer of three-year starter Bo Nix to Oregon, Auburn will have an open quarterback competition heading into the 2022 season. Finley, who finished the year as Auburn’s starter and made five starts as a freshman at LSU, and Calzada are now the team’s two most experienced options.
