Did Verstappen BRAKE CHECK Hamilton? | Saudi Arabia GP | The F1 Breakdown

Yet again, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen were often fighting for the same piece of race circuit. So let’s break down some of the incidents from the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Why did Verstappen crash in qualy, when he didn’t really need to? Was Lewis’ racing fair after the first restart? Will Verstappen EVER yield in wheel-to-wheel racing? And, did he brake test Lewis? First off, the drama all started on Saturday, when Max had put together a mostly astonishing lap - fast, hard and taking risks. He was over 2 tenths up on Hamilton at the end of sector two. Then into the final corner he tried to carry a little too much speed in, locked a front left tyre. Whether or not he needed to be pushing so hard at this point is debatable - especially when he had a good margin. However, it’s unlikely he knew Hamilton’s time, I doubt he was talking to his engineer during the lap (as the Jeddah circuit requires so much focus with little break). So, Verstappen’s only reference would have been his own time delta - the plus or minus his best time - on the steering wheel. Why Formula E Drivers are SO AGGRESSIVE!
Formula E races are mad, and the drivers are SUPER aggressive. In one race this year there were 190 overtakes - there are huge lunges, loads of wheel banging and lap long battles. But what makes it possible to overtake so much, and why are the drivers SO aggressive? Formula E is now on its 3rd generation of car. But, is this the best way of going about building a fast car? To answer this, we must understand how both Red Bull drivers like their car set up because they have two very different driving styles. For Max, he’s famous for wanting a car that’s very pointy with lots of front-end grip. When I say pointy, I mean that the grip is biased towards the front - as opposed to the rear. You can do this in a number of ways, with mechanical grip, weight distribution or aerodynamics. But we will get to that. More grip on the front means that the front axle has great turn in - but less grip at the rear can make it unstable. This is good for Max, as he likes the responsive turn-in. How Sebastian Vettel's Unique Driving Style Won 4 World Titles

And he’s done all of it using a pretty unique driving style. BUT, he’s consistently changed and adapted to the cars he's driven - through Torro Rosso, Red Bull, Ferrari and now Aston Martin. So let me break down what made him SO fast - and how he’s had to change for each car, because he’s a master of driving incredibly intelligently. Let’s get into it. So we have analysed a load of drivers on this channel, but Vettel is most similar to Schumacher in the way he gets a car through a corner. To understand this, let me show you an example. First is a geometric racing line, it’s the shallowest arc you can take through the corner. Now, this seems like it’d be the fastest way around a track, but it’s not. When you factor in that cars also need to slow down and speed up through a corner - you end up with a different racing line. This line is not a perfect arc, but rather what drivers call “more squared”. This mean braking deep into the corner, making the car turn sharper at the apex, and then straightening the car quickly on the exit. Tyres have a finite amount of grip that can be used for braking, turning and accelerating - or a blend of these things. With a more ‘squared line’ the idea is that it allows you to brake later, as you’re using more of the tyre for stopping. Then you turn the car and use all of the grip for accelerating. Now, these are exaggerated examples, but to give some context - Hamilton, Alonso and Charles take a more geometric, curved line. As the line is more swallow, the drivers need less steering angle, so the minimum speed through the corner is higher. However, they are steering for longer, which means they’re slower to get to full throttle. And if you go back to Vettel’s Red Bull days - he was perhaps the most extreme of the lot. He would push the braking very late - sometimes so far that it looks like he’s missed the apex. Then he would pivot the car QUICKLY, and slingshot the car out the corner. Getting on the throttle whilst others were still turning hard. Smashing it over the curb at Imola, leading to a trip to the barrier. Then was just pushing it too far this week, venturing onto a dirty patch of the circuit and sending him into the wall. These seem like huge errors, ones that may rule him out of the championship this year - but I’m not so sure. How many mistakes had Max and Lewis made by this point last season? Let’s get into it. So what mistakes am I on about? Well, there are two main mistakes this season that I would class as a ‘Big Deal’. The first would be the chicane in Imola - Charles was pushing too hard and LAUNCHED it over the curb. Go back and look at that replay, he brakes too late and enters the corner with WAY too much speed. He then takes too much curb, leading to the plank hitting the sausage curb and pirouetting his Ferrari into the wall. A slam dunk driver mistake. He was in third at the time, but it sent him down to 8th. The final result was 7th, but that cost him 7 points. And in a championship where two drivers have pretty equal cars, that’s a lot. Then there is the mistake in France, Verstappen had put incredible pressure on Charles, and neither had made any mistakes. So Verstappen boxed to overtake, with Charles staying out. To avoid the undercut Leclerc was pushing SO hard, and went off at Turn 11. The double left. Danny Ric has been struggling this year - on pace, consistency and overall results. And its not helped by his teammate Lando outperforming that car this season. At the moment, Lando has 48 points, to Daniels 11 - so Lando has brought in 82% of McLarens points this season. Then there is qualifying pace - on average, Lando is 6 tenths quicker - in the same car. (0.596) So I looked into what’s going on, but to understand that - we need to understand Ricciardo’s driving style. Because it will explain why he was so quick at Red Bull, but not at McLaren. — Quickly though, I need to mention that Danny has had some great results. With several podiums and even a win back in Monza. But what we’re looking at is one of the drivers with the worst records compared to their teammate - who is obviously working with the same tools. So really, it's the gap to Lando that is interesting here. — So what is Danny’s driving style like? Well, I have broken down a number of driving styles on this channel - and really, they are subtle points that allow the driver to get the car through the corner quickly. For example, Hamilton is incredible on the brakes. He is able to get the car stopped well, without losing time on exit. Vettel takes a more vee’d off line to rotate the car mid-corner, similar to Schumacher. But all of these driving styles tie in closely with the car they are driving. For example, Alonso back in 2005 and 2005 was driving a Renault with a really strong rear end and using tyres that were rock hard. So he induced understeer on the way into the corner, which heated the tyres and gave him the grip to pivot the car mid-corner and fire it out on exit. But he isn’t using that style at Alpine for example, as it would chew up the tyres and he would be pretty slow. — But, having said that - Danny was at his peak at Red Bull between 2014 and 2018. So let's look at his style then. The Red Bull was incredible aerodynamically, with more raw downforce than other teams (on the whole).
