BLACKSBURG – No. 18 Virginia Tech baseball won its first shutout game of the season, 5-0, against Florida State to split the series on Saturday at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park. The Hokies (9-4, 5-3 ACC) beat the Seminoles (5-6, 3-5) to improve to 5-3 in ACC play. If Tech wins on Sunday to claim the series, it would mark its first series to its name over Florida State since 2017. Chris Gerard (2-1) got the start for the Hokies, his third start of the season. He allowed just two hits, no earned runs and eight strikeouts in seven innings, marking the 100th strikeout of his career. The Hokies scored five runs on four hits, including a home run from Jack Hurley for his third home run of the season. THE GAME The Hokies scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning on a fielder's choice to third base, with Hurley crossing the plate. Fritz Genther scored in the bottom of the second for Tech after he stole third and reached home on a throwing error by the catcher to make it 2-0. Tech would tack on three more insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth, with Hurley hitting a homer to straight-away center, Gavin Cross scoring on a throwing error and Carson Jones earning a sac fly to score TJ Rumfield. Coming in the top of the eighth, Matthew Siverling was steady and allowed no runs and just one hit in 2.0 innings of work to preserve the win. NOTES - Tanner Schobel added two more RBIs against Florida State, bringing his season total to 19. TJ Rumfield leads the team with 20 hits, four of those in the two games against the Seminoles. - Gerard's eight strikeouts brought his season total up to 27 and brings his career total to 100 strikeouts in 19 appearances. - The last time the Hokies won a series against Florida State was on March 19, 2017 with a 17-0 win in the rubber match over the Seminoles. - Cross was hit by a pitch twice in Saturday's game against Florida State. He was also hit twice in Game 2 against North Carolina (8-4, 4-3) on March 6 this season.
BLACKSBURG, VA – The Virginia Tech women's basketball team connected on four of their first five 3-pointers and got out to an 18-6 lead and hit clutch shots late in the game to secure its fifth consecutive ACC victory, 76-68 over Syracuse, a program record. The Hokies now stand at 12-7 (7-7) with two regular season games to play and the Orange fell to 11-6 (8-6). "Really big win for us in so many different ways," Kenny Brooks stated postgame. "The first half I thought they were phenomenal. We executed, we got the ball where we wanted to and we controlled the narrative of how the game is going to be. All-in-all a great game, I think our kids did a tremendous job and we had a lot of people step up. Aisha Sheppard was great, 23 points, I thought Georgia Amoore was phenomenal. She controlled the tempo, she did everything for us." Tech began the game with hot shooting, something that continued through halftime where the team held a 22-point advantage, the largest lead in any game this season. Syracuse would tighten the game in the second half, utilizing a trap on defense and scoring a total of 15 points in transition. The Orange were led by Tiana Mangakahia who scored 18 points and dished out seven assists in the game. The Orange brought the lead down to nine multiple times but could get no closer before the final seconds. The Hokies saw four players reach double figures led by Sheppard's 23, Kitley scored 18, Amoore had 14 and Cayla King added 14 as well. For reigning ACC Freshman of the Week Amoore, it was her third straight game with 13 or more points and she had four rebounds and five assists. CORAL GABLES, FLA. – The Virginia Tech women's basketball team tied a program record with its fourth consecutive ACC win Thursday night, defeating Miami 75-55. Tech moves to 11-7 (6-7) on the season ahead of an extended time off due to a recent postponement. "Extremely proud of the kids, it's my first time ever winning here, it's an extremely tough place to play," Head Coach Kenny Brooks said postgame. "I thought they listened to the scout, came together, executed the scout and were really locked in. I think things are coming together for us. We got great performances, obviously from Liz with a double-double. I thought Georgia Amoore was fantastic." Amoore tied a career-high with five made 3-pointers in the game and ran the offense efficiently, with five assists to just one turnover. She also came up with four steals in the contest. Miami, (8-8, 5-8) was led by a 20-point double-double from Destiny Harden and Kelsey Marshall scored 15 points in the effort. The Canes closed the gap to nine towards the end of the third quarter but would get no closer as the Hokies scored the first 10 in the fourth and would go on to win by 20. Center Elizabeth Kitley scored 19 points on 15 field goal attempts and secured her league-leading 2th double-double of the season. Also in the frontcourt, Tech got 14 points and 10 rebounds combined from Azana Baines and D'asia Gregg. Aisha Sheppard scored 19 in the game. The Hokies held the Hurricanes to 38% shooting and just five free throw attempts. BLACKSBURG – Aisha Sheppard scored 28 points after halftime and the Virginia Tech women's basketball team earned the program's first win over a team ranked inside the top four of the AP Poll with an 83-71 overtime victory on Carilion Clinic Court Thursday night. For the Hokies with the win, Tech's first over a ranked program since 2019, their record moves to 8-7 (3-7) and the Wolfpack falter for the first time this season and stand at 11-1 (6-1). A tightly contested first half ended with the Pack leading by four points, 30-26, despite the Hokies' top scorers, the most dynamic tandem in the conference, Sheppard and center Elizabeth Kitley being held to just two points combined on 1 for 12 shooting. But the second half was a different affair as Sheppard saw shots fall and her aggressive play led to a career-high 14 free throw attempts, of which the senior made 12. Sheppard, the program's leader in 3's was honored pregame with a commemorative basketball, added four more to her tally, including the dagger in overtime. After a 7-0 spurt late in the game, Tech led by three points and NC State forward Camille Hobby was forced to shoot a deep 3-point basket, which went in just as time expired. The Hokies didn't blink, with Sheppard scoring the first basket of the extra session and the Hokies would go on to score 26 points in the frame to pull away for the historic win. "First and foremost, we needed that," Head Coach Kenny Brooks stated with a smile. "Very happy for the kids, very proud of their performance and very proud of them period. The way that they've handled everything that's been happening and just very proud. To finally be able to get over the hump and get one of this magnitude feels really good." Kitley once again collected a double-double in the game and Azana Baines. Scored a career-high 16 points and pulled down five rebounds in the effort. The Hokies made 11 3's, while holding the Wolfpack to just five. Hobby led the Wolfpack with 19 points. It was the second game of the season that this combination had been utilized from the opening tip, with the first being the first matchup against the Wolfpack when the Hokies scored 87. •Kitley registered her 11th double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds. She leads the conference in that category after securing her fifth consecutive one. NEXT TIME ON CARILION CLINIC COURT •A second meeting against the North Carolina Tar Heels is scheduled for Sunday, January 31 at Cassell Coliseum. That game is set to tip at 4 p.m. and will be shown on ACC Network. •The Hokies won the first meeting of the season 66-54 in Chapel Hill on January 14. In that contest, Elizabeth Kitley registered a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds and Cayla King and Aisha Sheppard each added 15 points. It was the program's third consecutive victory in Carmichael Arena.
