If there is one thing everybody loves in football, it’s the tale of an underdog. Everybody loves watching a struggling player, a struggling manager or a struggling tram rise to the challenge and overcome the odds to achieve a certain degree of success. It is that Rocky-esque touch that makes football stories all the more enjoyable and all the more exciting. And Italy’s Serie A tournament has its own underdog storyline: Atalanta. By this point, a lot of football fans are familiar with the Italian side: they have managed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League in recent years and they have competed in both the international tournament and Serie A with attractive, modern and attacking football. Manager Gian Pero Gasperini, often an underrated coach in Italian football, managed to turn this small team into a regular of European football and one of the most exciting sides to watch. But how all of this happened? What are the reasons behind the rise of Atalanta? We’ll tell you all you need to know right here. The input of Gasperini. Born in Grugliasco, Italy, in January 26th of 1958, the 63 year old Gian Pero Gasperini was a midfielder in his playing days and despite being formed in Juventus, Gasperini played most of his career in the lower divisions of his country during the vast majority of the late 70s, 80s and early 90s. Gasperini would coach for most of the 90s in Juventus’ youth system and then would go on to his first senior experience at then-Serie C1 one side Crotone in 2003, kickstarting his career as a professional football manager. His big chance would come with Serie B side Genoa in 2006. He would take the team to Serie A in his first season and the 2008/2009 season was the club’s best in top flight Italian football in the last twenty years or so, finishing fifth while playing attractive football, much like Gasperini has done at Atalanta. Jose Mourinho, then manager of Inter Milan, said that Gasperini was the toughest manager he ever faced in Italy and it makes a lot of sense when you consider that the Portuguese signed Diego Milito and Thiago Motta from Gasperini’s Genoa side. Two players whose careers were reignited thanks to the current Atalanta manager. But after a few stints at Palermo, a doomed return to Genoa and a miserable time at Inter Milan, where he was sacked after just five games without victory in 2011, Gasperini’s career seemed to be heading on a downward spiral until he was given the chance to takeover at Atalanta in 2016. Atalanta was at best a mid-table side that was struggling with relegation and there wasn’t a lot of hope in the summer of 2016 that Gasperini was going to turn their fortunes around. But one of the first measures that the manager did was to bet on young talents. This move made a lot of sense considering that, unlike the first team, Atalanta youth team has always been performing well achieving the Primavera Scudetto in 2019.
