Ramsdale: "A night I won't forget" | San Marino 0-10 England | Group I | 2022 WCQ | 2021/22

Reaction from Gareth Southgate and Aaron Ramsdale after England qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in style with a 10-0 demolition of San Marino in Serravalle in their final Group I match - the last time 'The Three Lions' scored 10 in a game was against the United States in New York City in May 1964, but this was the first time they had hit double figures in a competitive fixture. Star forward Harry Kane scored four of those goals and has now drawn level with Gary Lineker on 48 in third place on England's all-time leading goalscorers list. #EnglandNationalTeam #ThreeLions #GarethSouthgate #AaronRamsdale #Qatar2022 San Marino Stadium, Serravalle, San Marino. 15th November 2021. 0:00 SOUNDBITE (English): Gareth Southgate, England manager: (About the 10-0 victory over San Marino) "I think we gave a performance that was enjoyable for the supporters that travelled, that was clinical in the way that we went about it and that showed some exciting young players that are coming through who will have, of course, much tougher tests. But I have been involved in nights with England where these sorts of games were horrible, where the crowd were on our back, where the whole environment was very different, and it is nice to see young players going in and enjoying themselves in an England shirt." 0:33 SOUNDBITE (English): Gareth Southgate, England manager: (About Harry Kane chasing England's all-time leading goalscorer record) "Yeah, I mean, I think that will definitely be one of his goals, and the remarkable thing is we have not given him the opportunities of nights like tonight (against San Marino on Monday) too often. Certainly, the other three games of this nature in this group (against San Marino and Andorra), we did not give him the minutes and he understood that. But, of course, he has got huge personal ambitions, as well as the team ones. So he showed again the clinical nature and the mentality that he has got. There is no reason he cannot (break the record). As you say, it is almost not - 'is he going to break the record?' It is when and what might he do with it once he is beyond that point." 1:22 SOUNDBITE (English): Gareth Southgate, England manager: (About Qatar being heavily criticised by organisations such as Amnesty International over its human rights record in relation to the World Cup, particularly regarding the treatment of migrant workers) "It is a very complicated situation for us because we obviously have to go and work with people and represent the country (England) in a foreign land. And when you are doing that, you have got to be very... You have got to be 100 per cent sure of your facts when you are speaking. And that is not easy at the moment because it is hard to work through what is current, what is present, what is historic. We have a responsibility to represent our country in the right way. There are clear cultural differences between the two nations (England and Qatar) and also, we as a nation, do a lot of business with Qatar as well. You know, I was reading about Rolls-Royce (with) 10,000 new jobs. Heavy investment from Qatar into green machinery and the way of working. So it is hugely complex. But we will take the time to educate ourselves. And, if we feel that there are areas that we can highlight and help, then clearly we have always tried to do that and we would do that." 2:38 SOUNDBITE (English): Aaron Ramsdale, England goalkeeper: (About making his debut for England in the 10-0 victory over San Marino) +++PLEASE NOTE: MICROPHONE DISTORTION DURING THE SOUNDBITE FROM SOURCE FOOTAGE+++ "Yeah, a night I will not forget. A night I have been dreaming of for a long time. So, no matter who we played or what the score was, it was a special day for myself and my family. So, yeah, I think over the next few days, I think I will properly digest it and look back, and it will be obviously probably one of the proudest days of my life."
