Full Video Here Fam: https://youtu.be/_xuj5hYp6A0 Russell said he never would have played in the NBA, if St. Louis were to draft him. And Boston Celtics coach Red Auerbach wasn’t letting that happen. The Celtics were the first to draft an African American player, 6 years earlier. They were also the first team to play 5 African Americans on a team. Auerbach traded up to number 2 in the draft with the Hawks, to land what his team had needed to reach the next level. The Celtics already had the best passer in the league at the time, Bob Cousy. They had just gone 36 and 36, 3rd in the East, and lost the Eastern Conference(Division back then) Finals to the Syracuse Nationals. Red Auerbach said he doesn't know what Russell does, he'd never seen anything like it, so he couldn’t make him any better, he was already a goat. Russell added 14 points per game his rookie year, and 20 rebounds a game(19.6). This was a huge advantage, the rest of the league couldn’t match up with Russell, and defensively he was cookin’ everyone. Not to mention Russell and Cousy decided to create the outlet pass, scoring at will with the first fast break in the history of basketball. Russell would tell everyone to run to the other end of the court as soon as their opponent shot the ball, because Russell was almost always coming down with the board. It took 7 games, but Bill Russell and the Boston Celtics had won their first title. (1957) Not the first dynasty the NBA had ever seen, with George Mikan taking that title in the early 50s winning 4 titles with the Lakers He became the the first African American coach of the major leagues in 1966, and won 2 titles in his three coaching years. (first African American coach in the four major American sports leagues.) https://www.mercurynews.com/2022/09/07/oakland-school-community-remembers-bill-russell-says-his-generosity-will-continue-well-into-the-future/ The night before game 7 of the NBA Finals against the Lakers, Russ had been out at a bar when a fight broke out. Bill tried to break it up, but in doing so accidentally gets stabbed. Luckily Bill Russell was an absolute psychopath when it came to wining. He showed up with his stab wound, played the whole game, and won it and the title. In his entire career, Russell faced elimination 30 times. In those 30 games, he won 28 of them, and only lost 2. He had the Michael Jordan, or Kobe mentality before we knew what that was. Russell/Wilt Rivalry//Friendship And that Bums and Heroes mentality of the media would be how they framed basketball’s biggest rivalry of the time. In the 8 playoff series against Wilt, his team only won once. Bill’s overall record against him was 86 and 57. Wilt was taller, bigger, and stronger, but Russell had that psychopathic winners mentality unmatched in sports at the time. They put their friendship aside in 1969, as the Lakers and Celtics once again go to game 7 in the NBA Finals. Russell had a plan, he and Cousy would fast break the Lakers to death. Which worked great, as the Celtics were up 17 going into the 4th quarter. Conclusion In 1975, he would be inducted into the Hall of Fame. But he protested it, saying several African American players should’ve been inducted before him. He always stood up for what was right. When Boston retired his jersey number, the crowd gave him a standing ovation. But he didn’t acknowledge them, after all the city had put him through his career, the city didn’t like that at the time, but later he would come back for another ceremony where he’d acknowledge the crowd Bill Russell retired in 1969, at 35 years old. He won 11 titles, averaged 15 and 22 a game, and won 5 MVP’s in his career, 12 time all star won 4 rebounding titles 11 times made all NBA, and is one of the greatest athletes to walk the Earth. Thanks for watchin' ya'll🤙 SUBSCRIBE IF YA LIKED IT! 🏀 Spacing through the first minute's much better offensively. Tough Booker ISO try in the corner. We're daring them to knock down threes I don't like the start of our defensive possessions Germany uses picks so well, we're gonna struggle with this all game. Embiid Iso middy leading to a Schroeder bucket on the other end. 6:45 1stQ Another slow start for USA. when will we learn how to defend these international teams? Lucky foul draw there for Curry, it's taking us a while to get into offensive sets, if we get into them at all. More of the same from USAat 6:27 1st quarter. WIde open German 3, our defense is abhorrent. 5:45 again an early shot clock three where we set nothing up offensively. Exact opposite from Germany, although good D there from Embiid at 5:20 1Q This is wild, I'm a Kentucky fan, and this Olympic team feels like a Calipari Kentucky team. All the talent in the world but we're not together offensively and unlike Cal's wildcat teams our defense doesn't make up for it. Talent will not win games at this level Edwards corner three as guys continue to stand around. We've had a couple good moving offensive possessions but nothing to make you feel like we're improving in that area. Still can't defend anything either. Tatum fader, idk man I guess the iso game can win games it's just annoying, a recipe for getting in trouble when the other team can take the momentum because as we lose it we start missing shots nice transition foul draw there from Derrick White 2:28 1Q We play pretty offensively in transition. This bench units defense is better than our starting guys, but idk if it's gold medal level yet Dang our bigs are killin' it down low offensively now. Again iso game but it's working. Defensively Germany's gotten away from their sets and have slowed down a bit which has really made us look good defensively just before 1:00 in the 1Q 46 1Q nice block from Davis but just before then Edwards got caught jumping at the 3 point line. All good as Derrick White steals it leading to an offensive foul at :41 in 1Q Effort's been so much better so far this game, love the control we've shown, this is the first game we've really controlled the first quarter, and it started when our bench unit came in. End of the 1st, much better basketball from USA. Our bench unit is killin' it defensively and it's leading to all kinds of offense. Good to see us shape up and control the game early for once, but can the starters continue this defensive energy? we shall see 6:58 2Q awesome pick and roll from germany leads to a layup. tough to defend but we did a decent job Next offensive possession again we ISO ball it and Edwards misses everything, but he redeems himself with defense stealing it and dunking it THAT"S WHAT I WANNA SEE LETS GOOO 4:38 2Q man we're moving offensively starting with steph outside, into Embiid, who passed to I think Holiday and we miss the shot but there was a foul, and Embiid will shoot. I love the movement of that last possession that's so much better offense from us 3:40 2Q Theis steals from bron which eleads to a wide open transition three for Germany But on the other end we penetrate and Embiid offensive rebounds and lays it up. Much better game from Embiid so far 1:22 2Q Embiid with the play of the olympics BLOCKING THE CRAP outta that Germany drive Leads to Edwards with a DUNK on the other end. SEE WHAT DEFENSE CAN DO FOR US LESGOOOOO :55 2Q phenomenal German movement offensively as Booker lets his man get past him and has to foul at the rim. All good just something to keep in mind next possession as defensively as a team we've been alot better this game I will say I've seen alot of stuff about how this is the greatest olympic team ever assembled. Although it may look like that on paper, it's not even close to true the way we've exectued through the first 4 games. Yes we're winning and yes the world is much better at ball but the '92 dream team still holds that crown in my opinion Interesting how this game we're defending a more half court offense well, whereas against South Sudan we struggled against their athleticism and quickness which matched ours alot better. That Olympic game against South Sudan is gonna be so interesting man 8:41 Embiid redeems that rough defensive possession with a good 2 we're again leaving 3 point shooters wide open and at 8:08 Schroeder hits another one and now Germany's getting offensive rebounds. Our starters having a rough go at the beginning of the third 6;:06 Embiid with a three we're now up 4 and then he strips it from Wagner nice defense from Embiid there and then Bron hits a 3 Love the fight back here from us with a quick 8-0 run 3:32 3rd Q Tatum travel, don't beat ourselves USA c'mon now This USA team is vulnerable man effort, good defense, and nice offensive sets can beat us because we keep making silly mistakes when the other team has momentum

Boston Celtics Get The Broom Out - Ancient NBA 1959 Finals pt 18 #nbahistory #lakers

Watch The Full Video Here: https://youtu.be/DnEhR2OHiAA Thanks so much for watchin' ya'll 🤙 Description: This is Ancient NBA where we cover every NBA Finals there’s ever been. This week’s video is on the 1959 NBA Finals But first we have to go back a year. The Minneapolis Lakers have just finished last in the league, winning only 19 games in the 57-58 season. Fans weren’t coming to games as often, and the franchise was desperately looking for someone to help their former dynasty, get back to that championship status. And with the first pick in the 1958 NBA Draft, the Minneapolis Lakers Select Elgin Baylor out of the University of Seattle. They didn’t know it yet, but this man would be one of the greatest Lakers, well basketball players of all time. Meanwhile in the middle of the country, Bob Pettit and the St. Louis Hawks are celebrating their championship win over the Boston Celtics. Two years ago Boston beat St. Louis in the Finals for their first ever championship, but in 1958, the Hawks returned the favor. Bill Russell had gone down with an ankle sprain in game 3, and was unable to play the rest of the series.. He was more focused than ever, knowing his team was capable of a true dynasty. But the legendary Bob Pettit had just dropped 50 points in the last game of the Finals. to solidify the Hawks first ever championship over the Celtics. And now Pettit was trying to will his team to a third straight Finals appearance. St. Louis was also dynasty hunting, having appeared in the last two NBA Finals, and winning one of them, they still had a good group of players easily capable of going back. Cliff Hagan had led the playoffs in scoring last year, and former Laker Slater Martin was deep into his hall of fame career. Pettit felt good about their chances, as they win the west with a record of 49 and 23. But this year, they’d have some real competition in the West. As the Lakers finish second this year at 33 and 39. Elgin Baylor had single handedly willed his team from last place in the NBA. He scored 24 points a game as a rookie, the most complete player anyone had ever seen. And Bob Pettit along with the rest of the league could see that the Lakers would be most formidable in the west very soon. As the 1959 playoffs start, Minneapolis would take on Detroit again in the 1st round, winning the series 2 to 1. They would once again face St. Louis in the Western Division Finals. The Hawks would have to be at their best to beat this team. Minneapolis was hungry for revenge as St. Louis had beaten them out of the playoffs two years ago in the Western Division Finals. Eastern Division Finals Over in the Eastern Division the Celtics continue their domination of the league. Winning 52 games, the second straight year at the top. Bill Russell knew as long as everyone was playing their games, this league was theirs. And this year they had a much better chance of stopping St. Louis from taking their potential dynasty status away. As Russell continued to get better, he and the Celtics would start the playoffs in the Eastern Finals - against the Syracuse Nationals. The Nationals finished 35 and 37 this year, 3rd in the East, but they’d beaten the Knicks 2 to nothing in the first round. They had a guy named Dolph Schayes, a very good scoring rebounder. and Boston would find out the hard way that he was a hall of famer. The Nationals put up one of the best fights the Celtics had ever seen. Schayes was on a tear leading almost every game in points. The Celtics had been hit in the mouth in the Eastern Division Finals and Syracuse pushes it to game 7. But the Celtics on top of having a guy who was psychopathic about winning in Bill Russell, were the deepest team the league had ever seen. Tom Heinsohn, Bob Cousy, Frank Ramsay, I mean anybody on that team could score as many as you needed. Including Bill Russell. So the Celtics win game 7 by 5, and are headed to their third straight NBA Finals. They’d had a wake up call, letting the last series get to 7 games, so they were focused and ready on whoever would come out of the West. It would either be Bob Pettit and the St. Louis Hawks, who had been there the last two times with Boston. The Celtics were very familiar with the way the Hawks played, and felt comfortable this year if they had to face them. But this Lakers team was a surprise. From worst record in the league a year ago to now competing for a chance to make it to the NBA Finals. Bill Russell was watching Elgin Baylor closely. Knowing he had the potential to be great. Western Conference Finals The Rookie Baylor would lead his team into St. Louis for game one of the western division finals, but these were the defending champion Hawks. Cliff Hagan had a habit of leading the playoffs in points, and this game he’d drop 40 absolutely annihilating the Lakers by 34 points.

#shorts #handles #streethoops Celtics First Ever Finals Appearance - 1957 NBA Finals Pt.5

Full video: https://youtu.be/EfsC9gjrw5E Every NBA Championship starting with the 1957 season. But for context we have to go back 8 years… It’s 1949, the beginning of the NBA, and the best team in the league has just won their third championship trophy - - the Minneapolis Lakers. The Lakers are on one of the greatest starts to a franchise in sports history. Winning 5 titles between 1949 and ‘54 with their best man, George Mikan. [PUT A CARD LINKING MIKAN VIDEO] Meanwhile on the other side of the country, an irish dynasty is brewing. It’s 1950, and Coach Red Auerbach just left the Tri-Cities Blackhawks to join the Boston Celtics. The game’s best passer also just joined the team, Bob Cousy. The anchor to a good scoring team who through the 50’s can’t get past the Eastern Division Finals. The Lakers just won their fifth title(1954), without George Mikan, who was finally getting older, and dealing with injuries. In 1956, Mikan retired, leaving the greatest franchise in basketball looking for a replacement to the league’s best player. That title now belonged to Mr. Cousy of the Celtics, an opportunity to figure out how to become a dynasty even more successful than the Lakers. In 1956 the Celtics make a trade with the St. Louis Hawks, to draft Bill Russell. A defensive ball god with a winner's mentality similar to Jordan or Kobe. Red Auerbach had just made the best draft move in basketball’s young history. Russell had just come off a 55 game win streak and two NCAA titles with San Francisco. Russell was a defensive force, the league couldn’t match up with, immediately dominating the league. Averaging 20 rebounds a game, and although blocks weren’t counted until 1973 - - teammates say he had 10 blocks a game. In 1957 Russell and Cousy would come up with the outlet pass, and fastbreak teams to death as Cousy wins MVP He and Russell would begin their takeover of the National Basketball Association They would lead their Celtics to a league best 44 and 28 record. Winning the Eastern Division. While the Lakers are fighting for the 1 spot in the West, they end up in a tie with the St. Louis Hawks and Fort Wayne Pistons. So for the tiebreaker, the Lakers and Pistons would go to St. Louis, the winner gets the 1 seed. And St. Louis has their eyes on the championship, and know what they could do with a fresh roster after a first round bye. The Hawks beat the Pistons by 12, but the next game against the Lakers wouldn’t be so easy. Minneapolis also knows how important the 1 seed is after having been to so many NBA Finals. They want it just as badly. They push the tiebreaker game to overtime, but couldn’t outlast the Hawks losing by 4. In 1957, the NBA only has 8 teams. So the first round of the playoffs was best of 3, the Eastern and Western Finals is best of 5 and the NBA Finals added two games with a best of seven. Minneapolis enters the playoffs as a two seed, having lost the 1 seed to St. Louis, they’ll face the Fort Wayne Pistons. Over in the East the one seed Boston Celtics earned a first round bye, immediately appearing in the Eastern Division Finals, they’ll take on the Syracuse Nationals. 2 Years earlier the Nationals were NBA champs, beating the Fort Wayne Pistons in 7 games. Eastern Division Finals Game 1 But Red Auerbach’s made some moves making the Celtics impossible to match up with. Bill Russell’s defense helps Boston hold the Nationals to just 28% from the field in game 1 at the Garden. Offensively the Celtics were intimidating as well, as 6 players go for double digits taking game one by 18 points. Game 2 It’s back to Syracuse for game 2, where Boston would again have no problems defending the Nationals, who shot 35% this game. The Celtics had a secret weapon, rookie of the year Tom Heinsohn, who had 30 points this game. And on top of Cousy’s 25, and Russell’s 20 Boston goes up 2 nothin’ over the Nationals. Game 3 Now it’s game 3 and we’re back at the Garden where the Nationals face elimination. They were focused and ready to take it to the Celtics. They defended their best game of the series, holding Boston to just 29% shooting. But Boston was just as intense, holding Syracuse to 29% as well. Who had made the last game close, but in the end were no match for Boston dropping game 3 by just 3 points. The Celtics just swept their way to their first ever NBA Finals appearance. Red Auerbach now realized he’d made the moves to potentially build the league’s next great dynasty. He’d just have to get them to execute, the goal was to get everyone to forget about Minneapolis’ early 50s dynasty. Back in the West, the Lakers would try a Finals run of their own, beginning the playoffs against their rivals the Fort Wayne Pistons. 10 years ago (1947) the Lakers were the Detroit Gems. They had moved to Minneapolis after a horrible season winning just four games in 1946
