They had just gone 36 and 36, 3rd in the East, and lost the Eastern Conference(Division back then) Finals to the Syracuse Nationals. Russell added 14 points per game his rookie year, and 20 rebounds a game(19.6). This was a huge advantage, the rest of the league couldn’t match up with Russell, and defensively he was cookin’ everyone. But he protested it, saying several African American players should’ve been inducted before him. He always stood up for what was right. When Boston retired his jersey number, the crowd gave him a standing ovation. But he didn’t acknowledge them, after all the city had put him through his career, the city didn’t like that at the time, but later he would come back for another ceremony where he’d acknowledge the crowd Bill Russell retired in 1969, at 35 years old. He won 11 titles, averaged 15 and 22 a game, and won 5 MVP’s in his career, 12 time all star won 4 rebounding titles 11 times made all NBA, and is one of the greatest athletes to walk the Earth.
