Manchester United left to foot bill after Paris Saint Germain fans trash Old Trafford

Manchester United left to foot bill after Paris Saint-Germain fans trash Old Trafford - wrecking 800 seats - during Champions League fixture. Around 800 seats were ripped out or broken as Paris Saint-Germain visited Manchester United's Old Trafford ground. United chiefs have been left counting the cost of the European clash after rowdy French fans caused considerable damage. Nearly 3,500 PSG supporters travelled to the city to back their team in the first leg of the Champions League knockout tie on Tuesday night. Angry United bosses have today accused a section of the PSG fans of 'going too far' after thousands of pounds-worth of damage was caused. Around 800 seats will need replacing or repairing after being broken by being stood on or ripped out and hurled. Netting put in to protect fans in neighbouring home sections, including the disabled fans section in the East Stand, was ripped down. United fans sitting nearby complained of seats being thrown as well as spitting and other anti-social behaviour. Despite amnesty bins being placed outside the ground, flares and smoke bombs were smuggled inside the ground and let off. It is illegal in England to possess pyrotechnics inside, and in the immediate vicinity of, a football stadium. A video also showed PSG fans picking up a United steward him during the game. "Our fans created a great atmosphere getting behind the team last night," United source told the Manchester Evening News. "PSG fans played their part, but some of their behaviour clearly went too far." French fans earlier created a sea of noise and colour in Manchester city centre, lighting dozens of flares as well as singing and jumping around in Exchange Square. One fan suffered a serious hand injury and had to be treated by paramedics when a firework went off in his hand. Metrolink bosses are to hand over CCTV footage to police after two trams ferrying PSG fans to the match were damaged. Pictures from commuters showed gaping holes and cracks in the ceiling of two trams. They had to be taken out of service, causing delays to the network. United bosses are also assisting police identify some of their own supporters who threw missiles at former Reds star Angel Di Maria. The Argentinian winger received a hostile reception from the home crowd, which only got worse after he screamed in front of United fans. A number of missiles were thrown in his direction as he walked over to take a corner, including a beer bottle, which he picked up and pretended to drink from. United are expected will now face action from UEFA over the incident. A club source confirmed they are already working with police to try and identify the culrpits. Di Maria's manager Thomas Tuchel said: "Angel di Maria is very competitive. If you tease him, it does not make him weaker. "I thought he had a good relationship with the fans. "He was a bit nervous and needed to be calmer in the first-half. In the end he did well." United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists his side are not out of the tie, taking a 2-0 deficit to Paris for the second leg in a three weeks' time.

How PSG's defeat of Man Utd gave Man City boss Pep Guardiola food for thought

How PSG's defeat of Man Utd gave Man City boss Pep Guardiola food for thought. For Manchester United it was a jolted awakening from the trance that nine convincing victories in 10 games lend themselves to producing. Paris Saint-Germain, in their efficient, organised ruthlessness, shone a refined light on the frailties of a side who, despite their marked upturn in form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, remain blighted by an equal blend of imperfection and inexperience. It was one of the more impressive away performances that Old Trafford has seen in recent memory - PSG earned the enviable honour of becoming the first side to win by more than one goal in European competition at the famous old ground - and Thomas Tuchel's side provided a reminder to Europe, and the Premier League, that United still have considerable work to do to retake their place among the elite. The Premier League table, in its current guise, seems destined to be at least influenced, if not decided, by how Manchester City and Liverpool fare in their respective away trips to United. Jurgen Klopp's side are first up, on February 24, before Pep Guardiola and his record-breakers make the short trip across town on March 16. Those games, based on the season's evidence to date, will see United go through tests as stern as the one presented by Kylian Mbappé and Co. in Tuesday's 2-0 defeat. Perhaps the most impressive facet of PSG's performance was their limiting of Paul Pogba's influence in the centre of midfield. Arsene Wenger's analysis was the most succinct. "In the Champions League you cannot be dominated in midfield," the former Arsenal manager said in his punditry for beIN Sports. "The whole evening, Man United were dominated in midfield. Paris Saint-Germain played with five midfielders and they never lost the ball. Manchester United could never win the ball back. And when they had the ball they lost it very quickly because Paris Saint-Germain dominated the midfield to win the ball back. They lost the battle there in midfield." City's 2-1 victory at Old Trafford last season was the product of two scrappy goals that belied the Blues' dominant showing but Pep Guardiola might have the quiet hope of a more convincing scoreline after seeing from the bereft nature of United's attacking play against PSG once Pogba, the World Cup winner, was rendered ineffectual. Marquinos, the Brazilian centre-back-cum-defensive-midfielder, tempered Pogba's involvement to just 41 passes, a third short of his usual output, with the pace of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial rendered insignificant as a result. It was a performance that might have sent Guardiola's mind wandering about the possibility of acquiring Marquinos as the solution to the season-old problem of Fernandinho's successor. It is unlikely of course - not least because of the political tensions between Abu Dhabi, City's owners, and Qatar, owners of PSG - yet the 24-year-old's display will surely have gone some way to writing Guardiola's game plan for the trip to Old Trafford for him. Julian Draxler, the Germany winger, operated in behind Pogba and drifted across the pitch from right to left to feed Ángel Di Maria down PSG's left flank. Ashley Young looked every inch of a 33-year-old veteran playing out of position as the Argentinian exploited the space vacated by Young's questionable position and it is a wonder what Leroy Sané could produce with a similar opportunity. Paul Ince launches scathing a ttacks on Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba following Paris
Paul Ince launches scathing a ttacks on Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba following Paris

Paul Ince launches scathing attacks on Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba following Paris Saint-Germain defeat. Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez has been branded as 'nothing short of a disgrace' by a United legend following his second-half display against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday. Former United midfielder, Paul Ince, pulled no punches when discussing Sanchez after United's first defeat under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and called the Chilean's performances 'a joke'. Sanchez was introduced just before the end of the first-half following an injury to Jesse Lingard and then failed to offer anything in the second 45 minutes. United struggled without the pace and pressing of the England international and Martial - who also came off injured before the second-half kicked off - and their absence freed PSG to come at United and score two goals in the opening 15 minutes of the half. The Parisians then controlled the game for the last half an hour as Sanchez struggled to have any impact on the game. "The way Alexis Sanchez is playing at the moment is nothing short of a disgrace," Ince told PaddyPower. "His performances are a joke for the wage he gets. I wouldn’t begrudge his high wage, either, if I thought that he was truly putting his all in and playing well, but when you give someone that kind of money you expect a lot more. "The fans deserve better, Ole deserves better, and so do the rest of his team." Ince, who appeared 167 times for United, didn't stop there. "Maybe he has the hump because he’s not in the starting XI, but that’s hardly a surprise! He’s been hopeless, completely all over the place," he added. "There has to be a decision made about his future at Old Trafford, because it’s not working. "But this is the dilemma when you keep sacking managers, players the previous boss bought in on high wages are impossible to get rid of – so you have to try and make them work in your team. He’s a million miles away from being at his best, he looks like a completely different player.” Sanchez isn't the only player to face Ince's ire, however, as Paul Pogba has come in for criticism as well. Pogba was sent off towards the end of the game for a second bookable offence after a bad challenge on Dani Alves. Ince said: "Paul Pogba really let himself down against PSG. Just when he’s won the fans over, and he’s doing everything you expect of a top player, he goes and behaves like that. "I know it’s because he was frustrated at the game, but also it’s because Marquinhos was too good for him, he did a real job on him. The first yellow card he got was pure petulance – and the second challenge should’ve been a straight red anyway. "I’d say other teams will be taking notes, knowing they too can mark Pogba out of the game. And just like that, he’s out of the second leg. It’s stupid behaviour. He’s been a talisman under Ole, and to lose him for that game is beyond disappointing.” Ince also said that United are a long way away from the level of European's elite teams and how Solskjaer reacts to the disappointment of his first defeat in charge will be a real test. "The gap between PSG – even without two of their best players – is enormous. There’s a huge gulf between United and the top teams, and the PSG game proved that - it was men against boys. READ THE LATEST MANCHESTER UNITED NEWS "I’m not being disrespectful to Ole, or to the sides he’s played so far, but aside from Tottenham he’s not been really tested. That Champions League game was a real, tough test. Everything has ran smoothly, no major injuries or ugly fixtures. "But now, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial look like they’ll be out, and Paul Pogba got himself suspended for the away leg. We will see if he can come with adversity, I’d call it a true test of his management skills. We will get to see what Ole is made of." Paul

Manchester United team predicted for Champions League last 16 clash vs Paris Saint Germain

Manchester United team predicted for Champions League last-16 clash vs Paris Saint-Germain. Manchester United strolled to caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's 10th win in 11 games on Saturday with a comfortable victory over Fulham. A brace from Paul Pogba and an excellent individual strike from Anthony Martial saw United run out 3-0 winners and climb into the top four for the first time since the opening day of the season. Playing 19th placed Fulham gave Solskjaer an opportunity to rest some key players ahead of the return of the Champions League on Tuesday night, when French champions PSG travel to Old Trafford. Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Victor Lindelof, Ashley Young were all completely rested while Eric Bailly came on for the last five minutes. PSG, however, have had no such luxuries coming into the clash. The Ligue 1 giants will be without world's most expensive footballer, Neymar, and could also have Edinson Cavani and Thomas Meunier unavailable. For United, one position that won't change is the goalkeeper slot. David De Gea, who managed to come through an altercation with Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic in one piece, will start in goal. Only Luke Shaw is likely to keep his place in defence from the Fulham game with Young, Bailly and Lindelof - who didn't travel to Craven Cottage after picking up a knock but should be fine for Tuesday - all coming back in to the side. The midfield, however, could be completely unchanged. Much has been made of the improvements of United's attackers under Solskjaer but the marked rises in form of Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera in the middle of the park has been vital in the Reds' resurgence. All three should line up again against PSG and with the midfield being the Parisians weak point they could really punish them, too. Then in attack Solskjaer could name his most potent forward contingent for the first time since January 19. Martial started his first game since the 2-1 victory over Brighton on Saturday and got through 70 minutes unscathed, capping off his performance with a fine individual goal that had echoes of Cristiano Ronaldo. With the Frenchman showing no signs of rustiness after his short lay-off, he will no doubt play alongside Rashford and Lingard in attack as United look to take a big advantage into the away leg on March 6. Predicted Manchester United XI vs PSG: De Gea; Young, Lindelof, Bailly, Shaw; Herrera, Matic, Pogba; Lingard, Rashford, Martial. Predicted Substitutes: Romero, Jones, Dalot, McTominay Mata, Sanchez, Lukaku.

Man City star Sergio Aguero eclipses Arsenal great Thierry Henry as Premier League greatest
Man City star Sergio Aguero eclipses Arsenal great Thierry Henry as Premier League greatest

Man City star Sergio Aguero eclipses Arsenal great Thierry Henry as Premier League greatest Shearer claims. Alan Shearer says Sergio Aguero is better than Arsenal great Thierry Henry after the Manchester City striker equalled his record of Premier League hat-tricks on Sunday. Aguero has scored two hat-tricks in a week against top six sides Arsenal and Chelsea to take his total in the Premier League to 11. That equals the record held by former Newcastle and Blackburn striker Shearer, who has held the record outright since 1999. But Aguero's three-goal haul against Chelsea on Sunday saw him equal the record, and take his tally this season to 17 goals. And speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer said Aguero is 'one of the best' foreign players the Premier League has ever seen. Likening comparing him to Arsenal legend Henry, Shearer said: "they're two of the best foreign players we've had, certainly forwards, and you can chuck Didier Drogba in as well. "These two are giants of our game." When pressed to pick the better player of the two, Shearer chose the City man, saying: "Who's the better player? They're different. "Thierry is different coming from the left hand side and the right hand side, Aguero is more of a centre forward. "Both great players but i know you're going to ask me to choose one so I'm going to choose Aguero on his finishing ability. "I'm a huge fan of his. I said years ago he was world class and he keeps producing year after year." Shearer also admitted his surprise at Aguero's lack of personal accolades despite breaking records for City and in the Premier League. He said: "it's a surprise, last year was the only time he was in the PFA Team of the Year which I find staggering."
