If anyone saw the URI Lady Rams last season, they would know that Tammi Reiss' team has a habit of finishing strong in the 2nd half. That's exactly what they needed today at the Ryan Center recovering from an 11-point early deficit and scoring only 2 points in the first quarter. The Tigers, meanwhile, suffered their first loss since Nov. 20, 2019, ending the program's 26-game win streak. The Rams took their first lead of the game with 3:33 remaining in the third quarter when Marta Vargas drained a 3-ball to put Rhody up 29-26. Princeton managed to get back on top just before the end of the period however, pulling ahead 35-34 on a trey by Abby Meyers. Dolly Cairns scored 13 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter to help push Rhode Island to the finish line. She opened the fourth quarter with a layup that put the Rams ahead for good just 17 seconds in. A pair of made free throws by Marie-Paule Foppossi extended Rhody's lead to eight (53-45) with less than two minutes remaining but Princeton continued to fight and got within four (57-53) with under a minute to go. Cairns and Williams both hit 2-of-2 from the line down the stretch however, effectively sealing the 61-53 victory. Up next the Rams will host Harvard on Tuesday at 6pm seen Live on Yurview, Cox Channel 4 and ESPN+.

In desperate need of a win Rhode Island could not overcome several offensive droughts as it fell to Massachusetts 78-67 Saturday afternoon from the Ryan Center. Trailing 12-6 five minutes into the game, the Rams (12-9, 3-6 Atlantic 10) had their best spurt of the game, using a 16-2 run to pull ahead 22-14 with just under eight minutes to go in the half. Antwan Walker had seven points during the run, capping it with back-to-back dunks during one of the most exciting stretches of the season. However, UMass (10-11, 3-6 A-10) responded with an 11-0 run over the next 5:33 that featured 3-point baskets from Rich Kelly, Noah Fernandes and T.J. Weeks, Jr. The Minutemen rode the momentum, taking a 32-26 edge into the break after a pair of Kelly free throws in the final minute. Rhode Island managed to get back to a one possession game on an Ishmael Leggett layup two minutes into the second half. However, UMass used its shooting to keep URI at an arm's length. Weeks scored 22 of his game-high 30 points in the second half as the Minutemen never rescinded their lead. Despite the hot shooting by UMass, Rhody found itself down 55-52 after an Ismael El-Amin layup on the fast break with 10:59 to go. The teams traded baskets until a Ishmael Leggett basket made it a four point game, with the Rams down 60-56. UMass went on an 11-0 run for the second time in the game to open a 15-point lead. Rhode Island was scoreless for 4:28 as the Minutemen were able to put the game away and send the Rams to their fifth consecutive loss.
Tammi Reiss' URI Rams outlasted the UMass Minutewomen to move to 3-0 in Atlantic 10 play and into a tie for first place. Rhody came out strong, getting 9 points from Emmanuelle Tahane and 8 points from Dolly Cairns en route to a 24-8 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. UMass fought back in the 2nd half, behind a game-high 25 points from Sam Breen, and had cut the deficit to 6 at the end of three quarters. The Rams got 3-pt Field Goals from Chanell WIlliams, and Marie-Paule Foppossi in the 4th quarter but UMass cut the lead to just 2 points with under 2:30 to play. In stepped Cairns, who hit her second three of the quarter to increase the Rhody lead to 5, and Williams iced the game with four free throws. Cairns scored 21 points to lead URI to their 15th straight home victory, while Tahane added 15 points and Foppossi dropped 12.
