The South of Scotland took on The Barbarians at Mansfield Park, Hawick, in a game to raise money for the Bill McLaren Foundation. It was the first time these two famous teams had met, and The South were looking to add the famous name of The Baa-Baas to their list of scalps from the past when they beat Australia, Japan and Fiji, as well as drawing with South Africa (twice) and Argentina.
