Sampdoria Win the Derby! – Italian Football News 11 Dec 21

Fans at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa were treated to the sight of a man running around the pitch wearing a royal blue undershirt, orange boots and black pants. That man was Manolo Gabbiadini and he had just won the Derby della Lanterna for Sampdoria and Genoa. #Genoa #sampdoria #gabbiadini The former Southampton and Napoli striker opened the scoring with a deft header from Candreva's wonderful cross from the right after only 7 minutes. Early in the second half, a Candreva shot was parried by Sirigu and Caputo was the first to react, sweeping the ball home from 4 yards out. Then, on 67 minutes, Gabbiadini started a move from the half way line, knocking the ball out to the left and then getting on the end of the cutback to unleash a shot from outside the box that was deflected horribly over a stranded Sirigu for 3-0. Only then did Genoa wake up and when Matteo Destra headed them back into the game with 10 minutes to go, they put the visitors under real pressure. They hit the post twice in 4 minutes, as did Samp in injury time but when the final whistle came, Gabbiadini donated his shirt and shorts to the Samp fans in the away end, leavin him in his undershirt and pants! A great day for Samp, whose president Massimo Ferrero stood down this week after being arrested. Going into the weekend, Milan are top of Serie A on 38 points with Inter a point them and Napoli in third place on 36 points. Fourth-placed Atalanta are just two points behind Napoli. A good night in Europe for Italy's representatives in the Europa and Conference Leagues last night, both Atalanta and Roma coming out with decent wins. Two goals from Luis Muriel helped Atalanta to a 3-2 win away at Germany's Bayer Leverkusen. Leverkusen absorbed early pressure from La Dea to go a goal up after 11 minutes after hitting the woodwork a couple of minutes earlier. Neat play in the box between Malinovskyi and Muriel found the former with some space, which he used to calmly put away the equaliser after 23 minutes and just a couple of minutes later, the turnaround was complete with a classic Atalanta goal. Great work by Toloi to dispossess Leverkusen and then feed Malinovskyi in midfield saw the Ukranian unleash a perfect through ball for Muriel to run through and score. Four minutes after half time, Muriel got his second and Atalanta's third with a neat finish from the corner of the box. Moussa Diaby made things closer with a goal half an hour from time but Atalanta held out for the win. In the Conference League, Sergio Oliveira was both hero and villain as his first half injury time goal sealed the win for Roma away to Vitesse, but then game his teammates a nervy last 15 minutes when he was harshly red carded in the second half. Back in Italy, the World Cup play off game against North Macedonia is only 2 weeks away and the Italian FA have requested an increase in stadium capacity for the game. Currently, capacities are limited to 75% of maximum but for the game in Sicily, a special dispensation has been requested as the Azzurri hope to finally qualify for the World Cup in Qatar. Points shared again in yesterday's headline match between Atalanta and Juventus but Atalanta are furious with the result. Juve started well, overwhelming the Atalanta defence with Sportiello pulling off a great save from a Vlahovic shot and the Juve number 9 was left raging when Dybala cut inside and elected to shoot rather than play in the new Juve number 7. But the main incident of the half involved Juventus keeper Szcecesny. Koopmeijners was played through and as Szcecesny raced out, he brought down the Atalanta midfielder, miles outside his penalty box. VAR took a look and decided no action needed to be taken. To put it mildly, Atalanta disagreed. They opened the scoring 15 minutes from time when a free kick 25 yards out was played sideways to Malinovskyi who smashed it in for 1-0 Atalanta. The home side hit the bar from close range and were punished for that miss in the 92nd minute when Danilo rose highest to head home a Dybala cross. Gasperini refused to speak to the referee or the media after the game. Earlier in the day, Milan took the chance to leapfrog Inter and Napoli to lead Serie A. Rafael Leao put through by his keeper Maignan to cut inside and slot it past Sampdoria keeper Falcone after just 8 minutes. It was an awful game full of annoying stoppages and feigned injuries but Milan will be happy with the result. Draws between Genoa and Salernitana and Empoli/Cagliari while Verona thrashed Udinese 4-0. Jose Mourinho's Roma escaped from the their game away to Sassuolo with a 2-2 draw after going a goal up in first half injury time. A Smalling own goal drew Sassuolo level immediately after the break and Hamed Traore put them 2-1 up with 15 minutes to go. Sassuolo were reduced to 10 men when Ferrari received a second yellow card for a foul on Abraham and Roma drew level when Cristante's header was adjudged to have crossed the line before before being cleared. There is one more game remaining in Serie A, Spezia at home to Fiorentina tonight. That's all from us today, remember to support us via a donation on the Fountain podcast app! Inter crush Cagliari to go top as Napoli lose again – Italian Football News 13 Dec 21

Inter crush Cagliari to go top as Napoli lose again Inter moved to the top of the table for the first time since last season after their crushing 4-0 win against Cagliari on a weekend where title rivals Milan drew and Napoli lost. #inter #napoli #atalanta #milan Inter recorded a record 15 shot on target against an awful Cagliari side, whose boss Walter Mazzari is under increasing pressure. Martinez glanced in a near post header on 29 minutes to put INter ahead but they tore the visitors apart in the second half, with a goal from Alexis Sanchez 5 minutes after the break, followed by goals for Calhanoglu and Martinez' second. Napoli hit the woodwork early on through Elmas, just after Zielinski left the field suffering with breathing difficulties. Although Napoli dominated the game, Empoli scored the game's only goal in bizarre fashion. An Empoli corner was headed clear by Anguissa, but his header cannoned off Cutrone, who leapt with him, back over Ospina's goal and into the Napoli net. Petagna hit the woodwork just after the goal but Napoli could not prevent their second league defeat in a week. Atalanta moved above Napoli into the top 3 with a 2-1 win against Hellas Verona. Giovanni Simeone opened the scoring on 22 minutes, squeezing the ball past Musso from a tight angle. Miranchuk walked the ball in for the equaliser on 37 minutes to make the score 1-1 at half time. On 62, Koopmeiners drive from 2 yards out was heavily deflected past Montipo for the game's deciding goal. Not a pretty win for Atalanta, but a useful 3 points. Elsewhere, Torino recorded a welcome win 2-1 at home to Bologna and Sassuolo beat Lazio 2-1. Tonight, under pressure Jose Mourinho's ROma travel to Spezia. It's a rare empty midweek for Italian teams this week, before Serie A returns this weekend with a huge game at San Siro where Milan host Napoli. Atalanta, Napoli and Lazio in Europa League Playoffs! – Italian Football News 10 Dec 21

Defeat for Atalanta sees them join Napoli and Lazio in the Europa League Playoffs. Atalanta gave themselves a mountain to climb last night when they stood 3-0 down at home to Villareal in a game they had to win to go through to the knock out rounds of the Champions league. #atalanta #napoli #lazio They were a goal down after just three minutes and then conceded again on 42 and 51. They did set up a crazy finish with goals from Malinovskyi and Zapata with 10 minutes to go, but despite hitting the woodwork three times, they couldn't get the points they needed and they go into the Europa League play offs as an unseeded team. Both Napoli and Lazio will join them, but as seeded teams. Lazio blew the chance to win their group as they drew 0-0 away to Galatasaray, while Napoli won a topsy-turvy game 3-2 at home to Leicester to jump into 2nd place. In the Conference league, Roma did their job, winning 3-2 at CSKA Sofia and won the group as Bodo Glimt could only draw their game.
