Charlton 2-0 Plymouth: New boss Lee Bowyer off to flying start

Lee Bowyer only had two days as the temporary main man at Charlton before the Plymouth game. That was enough to inspire a 2-0 win, revitalise their play-off hopes and give one of England's most mistreated fanbases belief again. The former Leeds and West Ham midfielder has been back at the Valley since January as assistant to Karl Robinson. When Robinson left by mutual consent in mid-week, Bowyer stepped up. Against Plymouth, his players did too. This was a crucial game in a play-off race that seemed to be slipping away from Charlton.  Charlton Athletic overcame Plymouth to end their eight-match unbeaten run in League One Victory at the Valley gave Lee Bowyer a fine start in his new job as Charlton's caretaker bossThey started the match five points off Plymouth in sixth. They can now hope that the man making his managerial bow on Saturday has enough about him to drag them back into the battle.Unpopular owner Roland Duchatelet has not sold up yet. His long goodbye does seem to have calmed down the most vociferous of the protests, and the usual chants in his direction were absent.Instead those gathered in the Covered End sang their new caretaker manager's name. Within 17 minutes they had plenty of justification. First, Lewis Page volleyed home from 30 yards. Then Michal Zyro headed in from yards out.Whatever Bowyer, who also made his playing debut with Charlton, dreamt on Friday night, it would have struggled to match up to this. After a run of four games without a win he made four changes, including a place for goalscorer Page at left-back.It spoke for the surprising nature of the start that Plymouth had gone into this game thinking no changes were necessary. Derek Adams had led the Pilgrims to seven wins in their last eight games. But that form did not carry, and they could not halt the ideal beginning to Bowyer's managerial career. Just two minutes in, Page met a bouncing ball with a left-footed rocket from 30 yards out. It flew straight into the top corner. There was a renewed drive about the hosts, with Tariqe Fosu excelling. A better finish from him after a dribble could have doubled their lead, but he curled a tame effort straight at Plymouth stopper Matthews.  Full-back Lewis Page lashed home a left-footed shot to give Charlton the lead on three minutes Michael Zyro made it 2-0 and celebrated with the ball under his shirt while sucking his thumb Zyro was congratulated by Charlton team-mate Joe Aribo after netting his second goal of 2018Not that it took long for a second goal of the afternoon. Japanese two-way star Shohei Ohtani drawing early Babe Ruth comparisons
Japanese two-way star Shohei Ohtani drawing early Babe Ruth comparisons

Los Angeles Angels Japanese import continues to shine as both pitcher and hitter Ohtani flirted with perfect game for six-plus innings on Sunday Japanese two-way star Shohei Ohtani continued to display Babe Ruth-like brilliance in the early stages of his Major League Baseball career as he flirted with a perfect game while pitching for six-plus innings in a Los Angeles Angels victory on Sunday. The 23-year-old rookie allowed just one hit and struck out 12 over seven scoreless innings as he improved to 2-0 as a pitcher in his team’s 6-1 win over the Oakland Athletics. The performance only increased the buzz that Ohtani, who hit home runs in three consecutive games last week, could become the highest-profile player since Hall of Famer Ruth to succeed on both the mound and at the plate. Shohei Ohtani: the future of baseball or empty hype? Read more Ruth managed to dominate both disciplines for the Boston Red Sox in 1918 and 1919 before his fateful move on to the New York Yankees, where he became the Sultan of Swat and seldom pitched. “I think he’s mature beyond his years,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia told reporters when asked about the right-handed pitcher before Sunday’s game. “He’s been challenged at a young age, so he’s seasoned to what a lot of players have to get acclimated to. He’s been playing at a very high level of baseball from a very young age. “Shohei, he’s very confident, he works very, very hard at what he needs to do, and there’s a lot on his plate. But he has the talent to do it.” Ohtani showed plenty of that talent when he retired the first 19 batters he faced, throwing a perfect game until Marcus Semien lined a fastball into left field for a single with one out in the seventh. “Probably my best outing ever was when I was in elementary school,” Ohtani, who shone for the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan before joining the Angels in December, said through an interpreter. He pumped his fist as he walked off the field after striking out the last batter he faced with two runners on in the seventh inning, receiving a standing ovation from the 44,742 in attendance as he departed. “I wanted to keep a clean zero on the board,” Ohtani said of his last out. “One hit would have been two runs - that’s a huge difference. I wanted that strikeout and I got it.” Nicknamed the Babe Ruth of Japan because of his dual threat, Ohtani became the first Major League player with two wins and three home runs in his team’s first 10 games since Jim Shaw for the Washington Senators in 1919, according to mlb.com. He also joined Ruth (1916) and Ken Brett (1973) as the only players in Major League history with a double-digit strikeout game and a home run in three consecutive contests. Ohtani homered in his first ever at-bat at Angels stadium last week and has continued to thrill fans with a .389 batting average at the plate, where he has three homers and seven RBIs. On the mound, which is where the Angels plan to use him primarily, Ohtani h

Steve Bruce rips into Aston Villa players after Norwich defeat

The loss severely dented their hopes of automatic promotion from the Championship.Aston Villa had the opportunity to cut the gap on second-placed Cardiff to just four points following the Bluebirds' home defeat against leaders Wolves on Friday night. But they failed to take their chance as the mid-table Canaries took all three points thanks to goals from Josh Murphy, Dennis Srbeny and James Maddison.Jack Grealish pulled one back for Villa midway through the second period but the Canaries fully deserved the win. Bruce said: "We were poor, really poor, and we didn't do nearly enough to get anything from the game.“There was no zip to our play, the defending for the second two Norwich goals was unbelievably poor and we absolutely got what we deserved, which was nothing."The players have let the supporters down - and they have also let themselves and the team down."It's really disappointing the way we have fallen away over the past four games, taking just four points. That's not promotion form, or even play-off form.“We have failed to perform when we really needed to and handed the momentum to others, which is really disappointing." Portsmouth: 21,100 Villa are at home to Cardiff on Tuesday and Bruce didn't need reminding that a win at Carrow Road would have made that one really interesting. And Bruce added: "We had a great chance to set that one up nicely but we didn't take it.“If we play like we did today on Tuesday night we will get turned over by Cardiff, that's for sure."We have to be better and I am sure we will be.“We have then got Leeds on Friday so we have got two home games coming up to put some pressure back on, but this was obviously a missed opportunity."

"What qualities do you think are important in a footballer? He has it," Tite said."The whole of Coutinho's work is very strong. He has passing, competitiveness, effectiveness at medium distance, speed of thought and execution, assists, and now a greater maturity, which is also important."He and Willian understand that they are offensive players.
