Anthony Martial put in a man of the match performance against Burton Albion and should start on the left wing to expose Southampton's right hand side. Mourinho should continue with the 4-2-3-1 and look to expose Southampton by drawing their defenders in between the lines. How Lisandro Martinez Will Fit into Ten Hag’s Manchester United | Starting XI, Formation & Tactics
How Lisandro Martinez Will Fit into Ten Hag’s Manchester United | Starting XI, Formation & Tactics

Download the SofaScore app to find out more about your clubs players! http://bit.ly/3pEnPPz After much negotiation, Manchester United have signed Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez for a reported fee of £46.5 million. Whilst he’s made his name in Europe as a centre back for Ajax, his skill set suggests that he could play further forward and with United still lacking a defensive midfielder, could he change positions? Statman Dave Clips ➡ http://bit.ly/StatmanClips First up we have to discuss his strengths and weaknesses. Standing at around 5 foot 9, Martinez isn’t the tallest footballer but it does mean that he’s very mobile and agile. He also reads the game superbly well and is aggressive in challenges. But his standout attribute is his passing and his ability to instruct and dictate his team’s build up. Defensively, Martinez isn’t a physical monster but he plays with his head. His speed and agility make him very comfortable at tracking opposition players when they’ve got the ball. Often, Martinez will pressure an opponent's back, preventing them from turning. Meanwhile when Martinez is up against a player with a physical advantage, he stands close enough to step in but not close enough to be pinned by a forward’s strength or be turned by their speed. He used this to great effect in Ajax’s 4-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in last season’s Champions League. In this tie he was up against Erling Haaland, one of the most athletic and physical strikers in the world but he finished the game with 8 Tackles + Interceptions and he won 3 out of 3 ground duels with the Norwegian international. ► SUBSCRIBE to STATMAN DAVE: http://bit.ly/StatmanDaveYoutube But where Lisandro Martinez really shines is on the ball. The Argentine international is one of the best ball playing defenders in Europe. Not only does he have a complete range but his technique is excellent as well. It might sound simple but his ground passes are crisp and don’t bounce, whilst his long passes are driven with speed and accuracy. And where possible, Martinez tries to pass to the receiver’s strong foot. This might not sound like a lot but it can grant his passing target an extra few seconds as it makes it easier to bring the ball under control. Martinez can also create chances directly. He loves a long pass over the top of defences into the right hand channel. This has proven to be highly effective for Ajax and last season he picked out Mazraoui making an untracked run. Whilst not as impressive, Martinez’s ground passes can be just as deadly. His confidence in his ability to escape pressure with body feints and quick direction changes gives him great composure on the ball. This sees him play with his head up, so when a gap appears in the defence he’s ready to play an accurate, line breaking pass. Using InStat’s Expected Assist model, which includes second assist passes, Lisandro Martinez had a value of 5.02 from last season of 0.13 per 90. That’s not just more than all of Manchester United’s centre backs combined but it’s more than the likes of Ruben Dias, Virgil van Dijk and Antonio Rudiger to name a few. ► CHECK US OUT ON TWITCH: http://bit.ly/SMDTwitch So what does this mean for Manchester United? Lisandro Martinez’s talent and skill set mean he could definitely play in a more advanced role. He could fill in at left back or even defensive midfield if required but what’s important is Ten Hag’s structure in possession. Defensively, a midfield role would make use of his aggression and awareness whilst providing an option for United’s problem position. However, it’s not a role he’s played that often. A world class player in possession and a very capable defender without the ball, Lisandro Martinez is exactly what Manchester United have been missing at centre back. But what do you think? Will Lisandro Martinez be a success at Manchester United? And where do you think he'll play? Let me know in the comments below! How Tyrell Malacia Will Fit into Ten Hag’s Manchester United | Starting XI, Formation & Tactics
How Tyrell Malacia Will Fit into Ten Hag’s Manchester United | Starting XI, Formation & Tactics

After hijacking Lyon’s deal, Manchester United have signed Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord for a reported 17 million euros as the Dutchman becomes the first signing of the Erik ten Hag era. Join me today as I take a look at How Tyrell Malacia Will Fit into Ten Hag’s Manchester United by diving into the Starting XI, Formation & Tactics that could see the Dutchman thrive at Old Trafford! Statman Dave Clips ➡ http://bit.ly/StatmanClips The 22 year old left back is without doubt a Ten Hag player. Despite being around 5 foot 7, Malacia is fairly physical, especially in duels which helps him in attack AND defence. He’s also reasonably quick and a good technical defender. In fact his technical skills as a whole are very good, especially his first touch, close control and wide range of passing. And finally Malacia is tactically very intelligent and has a great understanding of the game. This impressive skill set sees him operate as an inverted full back. Often he takes up very central positions, notably in the midfield area. For Feyenoord, this has worked superbly and Malacia’s tactical intelligence allows him to provide balance to his team’s shape. The left back is very much a supporting player and he does tend to operate from deeper positions where he can influence the play with his passing range however he still makes overlaps when he’s needed like a traditional full back. ► SUBSCRIBE to STATMAN DAVE: http://bit.ly/StatmanDaveYoutube Like a lot of modern full backs, Malacia shines when he’s in possession. He can play pretty much every pass on the pitch, and whilst he tends to keep things to a short or medium length, he can play accurate long passes, notably diagonal switches to the other flank. He’s also a very difficult player to knock off the ball and dispossess. In the final third he’s an unusual full back. Crossing is not his strong suit but he retains an excellent level of passing but again, this suits the role that he plays. His central positioning means he’s not always in a suitable position to cross from however he can receive in that Kevin de Bruyne sweet spot in the half space. When he does he’ll be pressured by defenders expecting the cross but often Malacia responds by faking the cross and slipping a teammate in behind with a through ball. This kind of passing is what you should expect from Malacia in the final third as he adds tempo to his side’s attack. Notably he does this with a well struck pass out wide or a line breaking pass or through ball like we mentioned earlier. But he also adds thrust with underlapping runs to the byline, often followed by a low cross. Defensively, Tyrell Malacia is a tenacious and dedicated defender. 1 v 1 he’s very good, winning the ball back through tackles and interceptions nearly 4 times per 90 [3.8]. Malacia has good defensive technique, highlighted by his body position when in a 1 v 1. He tends to control the situation by funnelling his opponent one way through his position on the pitch whilst orienting himself so he can make a challenge. He’s also a very clean tackler with exceptional timing which makes him very good at making recovery challenges. ► CHECK US OUT ON TWITCH: http://bit.ly/SMDTwitch So what can we expect at Manchester United? Expecting Ten Hag to deploy a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, Malacia will slot in at left back. He’s very much in the mould of a Daley Blind - a very good player in possession with a great passing range but one that doesn’t constantly influence the attacking play. So with that in mind expect him to operate in the defensive unit, either as a third centre back in a back 3 or from central midfield in the double pivot - providing Ten Hag uses a similar structure from his last Ajax side. But what do you think? Will Malacia be the first choice left back at the start of the season? Let me know in the comments below.
