275: The Seahawks move into first place in the NFC West after win vs Vikings, 49ers loss to Ravens

For just the 12th time in franchise history, the Seattle Seahawks have now won 10 or more games. Russell Wilson has helped to make that happen as he has been the quarterback for 7 of those 12 double digit winning seasons. The latest 10 win season comes after a 37-30 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Although the Seahawks were down at halftime, it was clear the defense had Cousins, Cook and Diggs bottled up in the first half outside of the first and last drives of the first half. A huge third quarter propelled Seattle to a three-score lead in the fourth quarter, but as we've learned to expect, no lead is ever safe. Looking ahead to the Sunday Night Football game against the Rams, Seattle will look to continue their 3-0 prime time streak, Carroll's streak of undefeated games in prime time in December, and Pete's next win has a chance to be his 100th victory on a field that helped propel him back into the NFL as the coach for the Seahawks. To get the win the Seahawks will have to find a way to keep Aaron Donald in check, put pressure on Jared Goff and deal with a new piece of the Rams puzzle with Jalen Ramsey now at corner. Closing out the first half of the show, we discuss the injury that Jadeveon Clowney is dealing with and somewhat recent context of what Marshawn Lynch went through at the end of the 2015 season. It may be an injury that Clowney will decide to fight through until the offseason. In the second half of the show, we talk more about how the playoff picture is shaping up for the Seahawks. We also congratulate those who have won the last few weeks in the pick'em. Simpson for his description of how the MVP race in shaping up between Lamar Jackson and Russell Wilson. Better at life honors go out to our Ring of Honor and Slack group and to Russell Wilson for what he has the opportunity to do over the final quarter of the NFL season.

320: Seahawks passing defense goes from historic worst to 2020 31st

The regular season has come to a close for the Seahawks following a 26-23 win over the San Francisco 49ers down in Glendale, Arizona. At the midpoint of the season, we were extremely concerned about a Seattle defense that was giving up passing yards at an historic rate. Not only were they worst in the NFL in 2020, they were on pace to be the worst in NFL history. If not for the 3-yard touchdown pass by the 49ers in garbage time, the Seahawks would have finished ahead of the Detroit Lions for the 30th spot. However, there has also been another turnaround. The offense went from scoring 30+ points a game through the first eight games to only having one game above 30 in the second half. But improving the defense through the acquisition of Carlos Dunlap and the 2nd play of Jamal Adams and D.J. Reed offering a big improvement over the first half of the season. It's possible to play both good defense and score 30 points or more. So what's going on? We discuss what changed from the first half to the second half and talk about which quarterback we'll see the Rams play on Saturday. In the second half of the show, we talk about the preferred route through the playoffs. We discuss the news of John Schneider getting interest from the Detroit Lions to become their general manager. Our 'Do Better' segment features talk around the Philadelphia Eagles and the reaction to their performance in the final game of the NFL season. Following a 28-14 victory over the Lions, Seattle was quiet at the trade deadline and didn't give up or acquire any picks. But they did open up a roster spot by dropping Brandon Marshall. Marshall hadn't seen much action in recent weeks and Coach Carroll mentioned a desire to add to special teams. And speaking of special teams, Michael Dickson earn NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors after earning a new nickname and making a play from his own end zone that was celebrated by his teammates, by his coach and by a former Colts punter who took to Twitter to offer an amazing call on the play. The Los Angeles Chargers are next up and Philip Rivers is having a solid season. The guys take a look at how the Chargers earned their 5-2 record and what the Seahawks need to do on defense to have success. For Seattle, their secret weapon may be their defensive coordinator who had a lot of success against Rivers in his previous position. The Chargers bring a secret weapon into this game, too, a second receiver with the last name Williams from a college we're not sure actually exists. This week's show features a deep dive into offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer's headwear selections and how it has impacted the games throughout the season. Adam sounds as though he's prepared to eat crow based on his reaction after the signing in the offseason and Brandan is prepared to make a deal with a local beat writer to track the coordinators headwear at practice. Do better nods to go out to players from the Jaguars for their behavior in London and to several members of the Packers organization for their behavior in the closing moments of the game against the Rams that continued to impact them through the trade deadline. Adam names another telescope that is better at life than Skip Bayless and Brandan honors the Seahawks first head coach Jack Patera who passed away this week.
