HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs Millwall (4-1) | Pre-season | Chambers, Lacazette, Pepe, Balogun

Four different scorers found the net as we continued our pre-season preparations with a commanding win over Championship side Millwall on Saturday afternoon. Calum Chambers grabbed our opener, while Alexandre Lacazette, Nicolas Pepe and Folarin Balogun were also on target. There was also a first glimpse of Albert Sambi Lokonga in our famous red and white, with the 21-year-old completing 45 minutes in central midfield alongside first Thomas Partey, and then second-half substitute Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Alex Mitchell's close-range finish from a late Millwall corner was a minor blotch on our performance, but overall Mikel Arteta will be pleased with his side's professional pre-season display following the potential disruption that could have been caused by the cancellation of our US tour. After all, his side attacked right from the first whistle and Kieran Tierney was the biggest threat inside the opening 10 minutes. First he dropped a shoulder to find Eddie Nketiah, who headed over, before Mohamed Elneny dragged the Scotland international's low cross wide of the mark. We were nearly made to rue our missed chances just moments later when Connor Mahoney's free-kick was headed off the base of the post by Jake Cooper. Then we were indebted to Arthur Okonkwo, whose quick reflexes somehow kept out former Gunner Benik Afobe from six yards. But then we did make our early dominance count. Pepe surged forward on the right-hand side and, sensing a deep delivery, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang peeled off to the far post. When the ball game in, our captain was stood back to goal on the edge of the box, but still managed to strike the crossbar with a stunning acrobatic effort. Chambers was quickest to react and tap into the gaping net. Half-time presented Arteta with an opportunity to freshen things up and he obliged, with Lokonga coming on for his Gunners debut, alongside Nuno Tavares, Karl Hein and Lacazette. And it didn't take our No 9 long to make his mark. Again, our build-up play came down the right-hand side and when Chambers found a yard of space, he arrowed in an inch-perfect cross for Lacazette to head home at the far post. The Frenchman was heavily involved in our third, too. Aubameyang occupied a pocket of space on the left-hand side and ran at his man before sending across a low delivery. Lacazette, hearing a shout, stepped over the ball, leaving Pepe with a simple finish into the top corner from 10 yards. Emile Smith Rowe could have got himself on the scoresheet soon after, surging forward with a trademark dart behind Millwall's back line. But after he'd expertly brought down Partey's long diagonal, he couldn't apply the finishing touch. There was still time for a fourth goal, though. Balogun, one of four substitutes made by Arteta on the hour mark, stretched the visitors' back four. Willian combined with Lacazette and spotted our academy graduate on the move, threading a ball through for Balogun to round the keeper and tap into the empty net. We looked to be heading towards our first clean sheet of pre-season but, with just minutes left on the clock, Murray Wallace headed a corner into Mitchell's path and the 19-year-old poked past Hein from close range. Arsenal starting XI: Okonkwo, Chambers, Holding, Mari, Tierney, Partey, Elneny, Pepe, Smith Rowe, Nketiah, Aubameyang. Substitutes: Hein (for Okonkwo 46), Lokonga (for Elneny 46), Lacazette (for Nketiah 46), Cedric (for Mari 60), Tavares (for Tierney 60), Balogun (for Aubameyang 71), Maitland-Niles (for Partey 71), Nelson (for Smith Rowe 71), Willian (for Pepe 71). #arsenal #smithrowe #nicolaspepe #balogun Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Willian, Hector Bellerin, Jordan Nobbs, Bukayo Saka, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Thomas Partey and more. Welcome to The Arsenal, Albert Sambi Lokonga!
Welcome to The Arsenal, Albert Sambi Lokonga!

Albert Sambi Lokonga has joined us from Anderlecht on a long-term contract. The 21-year-old midfielder came through the Belgian club's youth system after joining in 2014 as a 15-year-old and signing his first professional contract in November 2017. He made his first-team debut for Anderlecht in December 2017 and has been a regular in their side over the past two seasons, making a total of 78 appearances. A Belgium Under-21 international, Albert was called up at senior level in March 2021 when he was an unused substitute against Greece. Technical director Edu said: “We are delighted Albert has signed with us, as there was a lot of interest in him and he was a big target for us. Albert is a player we’ve been tracking for some time, and he will bring us strength in depth in the centre of midfield. We look forward to his continued development with us.” Mikel Arteta said: “Albert is a very intelligent player who has shown great maturity in his performances during his development. He has been coached well by Vincent Kompany and his team at Anderlecht. I know Vincent very well and he talks so highly about Albert and the positive impact he had to Anderlecht in recent seasons. We’re confident Albert’s ready for the next stage in his development and we’re looking forward to welcoming a new member to our squad with his quality and presence.” The midfielder will join up with his new team-mates in the coming days after he has completed the current isolation regulations for international arrivals into the UK. Albert will wear the No 23 shirt and have the name Sambi on the back. #arsenal #sambi #lokonga Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Willian, Hector Bellerin, Jordan Nobbs, Bukayo Saka, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Thomas Partey and more. TAVARES SCORES ON HIS DEBUT | Rangers vs Arsenal (2-2) | Pre-season friendly | Tavares, Nketiah
TAVARES SCORES ON HIS DEBUT | Rangers vs Arsenal (2-2) | Pre-season friendly | Tavares, Nketiah

New signing Nuno Tavares marked his first appearance in Gunners colours with an excellent goal, and Eddie Nketiah grabbed a late equaliser as we twice came from behind to earn a draw in Glasgow. We generally dominated our second pre-season friendly, but were left to rue a host of missed opportunities, while our defensive lapses were punished from two Rangers' corners. But there were plenty of positives to take as we stepped up our preparations - none more so than the performance of 21-year-old new signing Tavares. Before his goal he had already looked lively, looking to burst forward from his starting position at left back, but it was the hosts who took the lead. Shaven-headed Rob Holding cleared an inswinging free-kick, but from the resulting corner Leon Balogun rose above the defence to glance his header inside the far post. We had already squandered the best early chance. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pounced on a loose pass by Rangers keeper Allan McGregor, steadied himself but sent his shot just over the bar. Nicolas Pepe also curled a shot over after some nifty footwork from Aubameyang, and soon we were deservedly level, thanks to the new boy. Tavares showed great desire and willing to get into the box, and finished excellently with his right foot from a narrow angle. We were beginning to take control, and created plenty of chances to take the lead - the first fell to Aubameyang, but he headed wide from close range at the far post. Folarin Balogun was released in the box by the skipper shortly afterwards, and forced a smart save from McGregor before Aubameyang let another chance slip away. He couldn't convert from close range after a wonderful, incisive run by Emile Smith Rowe. We should really have been ahead at the break, and five half-time substitutions (including goalscorer Tavares) did nothing to disrupt our rhythm. Both Thomas Partey and Smith Rowe were denied by McGregor in the opening five minutes of the second period, as our shot count continued to rise. Just after the hour mark Mikel Arteta made another group of substitutions, but our attacking intent remained. Reiss Nelson was heavily involved and we continued to look dangerous, but were soon punished for not taking our chances. Again we conceded from a corner - for the third time this pre-season - with Cedric Itten heading home past Karl Hein. Our 19-year-old Estonian keeper then made a good low save from Stephen Kelly to keep the deficit at one and we soon made sure it was a costly miss from the Rangers youngster. Nketiah fired us level after wonderful work inside the area to create an opening, eventually striking home left footed through a crowd. Hector Bellerin tried his luck with his left foot from just inside the area, while Sead Kolasinac and Willian both shot over as we desperately sought the winner. It wouldn't come, and we had to settle for a draw in an entertaining friendly match. #arsenal #rangers #highlights Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, David Luiz, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Danielle van de Donk, Willian, Hector Bellerin, Jordan Nobbs, Bukayo Saka, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Thomas Partey and more. Nuno Tavares has joined us from Benfica on a long-term contract. The 21-year-old defender developed through the Benfica youth system, making his Benfica B debut in October 2018, before progressing into the first team squad. He made his first-team debut in the Portuguese Super Cup win over Sporting Lisbon in August 2019. Over the past two seasons, the Portugal Under-21 international - who is predominantly a left-sided defender - made 25 appearances for Benfica. He was in the matchday squad for both matches we played against them in last season’s Europa League last-32, coming on as a late substitute in the second leg. #tavares #arsenal #signing Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Willian, Hector Bellerin, Jordan Nobbs, Bukayo Saka, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Thomas Partey and more.
