Chennaiyin FC delivered a solid display to defeat FC Goa 4-1 in the first leg of the Hero Indian Super League semi-final at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Saturday. After a goalless first half, goals from Lucian Goian (54'), Anirudh Thapa (61'), Eli Sabia (77') and Lallianzuala Chhangte (79') delivered the goods for the hosts and secured a crucial lead ahead of the second leg fixture away from home. Saviour Gama (85') came off the bench to score a vital away goal for FC Goa, as the League Winners endured their worst defeat of the season so far. NorthEast United, Chennaiyin split points in final game of league phase The league stage of the Indian Super League came to an end after NorthEast United and Chennaiyin FC played out a 2-2 draw at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium on Tuesday. Masih Saighani fired Chennaiyin into the lead (17′) before two goals in either half by Martin Chaves (43′, 71′) seemed to have handed all three points for NorthEast United. But, a late equaliser from Lallianzuala Chhangte (90+3′) ensured the away side took a point. NorthEast finished their season on the ninth spot with 14 points. Chennaiyin, on the other hand, finish fourth with 29 points and will now take on FC Goa in the playoffs. Old boy Goian returns to end Mumbai dreams Mumbai, February 21: There was heart-break for Mumbai City FC in the most poetic form when Lucian Goian scored the winner against his former club to help Chennaiyin FC qualify for the Hero Indian Super League playoffs after a tightly-contested clash at the Mumbai Football Arena here on Friday. Clear-cut chances were few and far between in what was an intense contest that saw Mumbai City reduced to 10-men in the second half. But Goian’s 83rd-minute strike was enough for Chennaiyin to win the contest 1-0 and complete the ISL play-off lineup. Mumbai City end the league stage in the fifth spot with 26 points. FC Goa scripted history by becoming the first-ever Indian club to secure a spot in the AFC Champions League group stage following a 5-0 win against Jamshedpur FC in their final Hero Indian Super League group stage clash at the JRD Sports Complex here on Wednesday. Ferran Corominas (11'), Hugo Boumous (70', 90’), Jackichand Singh (84’) and Mourtada Fall (87’) made it a five-star affair for Goa as they also became the first-ever side to record 50 ISL league wins. They also broke their own record and ended the league stage with 46 goals - an all-time high. The win ensured that Goa finished the league stage as toppers with 39 points from 18 matches, claiming the Hero ISL League Winners Shield in the process.
