Orlando Pirates will play Bloemfontein Celtic in the MTN8 final, after a comfortable aggregate win over Kaizer Chiefs in the semi-finals. Pirates beat Chiefs 2-0 in the second leg at the FNB Stadium, to go through 5-0 on aggregate. Desperate to get back into the tie, Chiefs dominated possession in the opening half, but they weren’t able to create any clear cut opportunities. In fact the best chances fell to Pirates on the counter, but Chiefs were able to deal with any danger. The Amakhosi were dealt an early blow when Reeve Frosler had to go off injured, and he was replaced by Siphelele Ntshangase just before the half hour mark. And at halftime the score remained goalless, with Pirates maintaining their 3-0 aggregate lead from the first leg. In the 58th minute, Chiefs came close to opening the scoring but the crossbar denied Ntshangase from long range. Seconds later Pirates were in the lead, the ever-dangerous Deon Hotto broke free on the counter, and while his initial shot was saved by Daniel Akpeyi, the Chiefs stopper could only steer it in into the path of Fortune Makaringe, who tapped in. Substitute Linda Mntambo made it 2-0 in the 79th minute as he raced clear after being played in by Hotto, and 'Figo' calmly finished into the bottom corner. To rub salt into Chiefs' wounds, Eric Mathoho picked up two yellows, and was sent off in stoppage time. A comfortable win in the end for Pirates, as Josef Zinnbauer guides Pirates into their first MTN8 final in six years.
Orlando Pirates assistant coach Fadlu Davids will be in charge of the ‘Buccaneers’ when they face rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the second leg of the MTN8 semi-finals. Head coach Josef Zinnbauer will be absent due to a family crisis in Germany, he left immediately after hammering ‘Amakhosi’ 3-0 in their first leg encounter, therefore, Davids will have to continue the marvelous work and ensure that Pirates reaches the final of the competition. It seems like an impossible task for Chiefs to come back from 3-0 down in their second encounter, but Davids will not be comfortable as he plans to unleash his charges to get more goals and make things even more difficult for their rivals. Davids understands the unpredictability of football as he witnessed various football teams completing such impossible comebacks, therefore, he and his Pirates outfit will go into this game with the intention of winning it, instead of trying to defend the 3-0 aggregate score. Chiefs will have to score at least four goals without conceding for them to advance to the final, however, Davids will search for at least one away goal and guarantee Pirates' place in the final. “We approach the match like a normal match and we will take the aggregate score-line out of the equation, I think we will make a mistake if we dwell too much on our 3-0 lead,” said Davids during the MTN8 press conference. “We have seen the Champions League finals were teams drop a lead like this one on second legs, so we will play the next ninety minutes with and approach this game by trying to score goals. “Chiefs still have the same squad and we know their strengths and how dangerous they can be especially with an experienced coach like Gavin Hunt, he is going for goals and we know they can immediately turn the game around so we won’t undermine Chiefs on this game, but we’ll take it as a normal game.” “Chiefs could’ve been easily 2-0 up on the first leg, but we were fortunate enough not to concede and actually score our three goals, but we know they are still a quality side with quality players and can turn the game around.” All action will unfold at FNB Stadium on Sunday (15h00) when the two Soweto Giants lock horns in an exhilarating clash where only one team can advance to the final and stand a chance of ending their trophy drought. Both teams have spent fie years without silverware glory, and this might be an opportunity for them to rewrite history.
