Former unified heavyweight world champion Andy “The Destroyer” Ruiz Jr. bounced back from an early knockdown to defeat all-action heavyweight Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola by unanimous decision in the main event of a FOX Sports PBC Pay-Per-View event Saturday night from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. "Chris is a veteran and a hard puncher,” said Ruiz. “We did what we had to do tonight. We got the victory that we wanted. I was at my lowest point and now I have to climb the ladder again. I'm thankful for the victory and I'm ready to move on to the next.” The battle between boxing’s two greatest Mexican-American heavyweights in Ruiz (34-2, 22 KOs) and Arreola (38-7-1, 33 KOs) began with fireworks, as the underdog Arreola landed a powerful overhand right that forced Ruiz to touch the canvas and earned Arreola an early knockdown on the cards. Ruiz was able to recover and survive the second round, taking the knockdown as a wake-up call and prompting him to initiate numerous big exchanges in the third round. "He got me with a good clean right hand in the second round,” said Ruiz. “I was too overconfident and dropped my hand a bit. Hats off to him. We just kept pushing and pushing. I switched up and started focusing on counterpunching and working the body.” Both men tasted power punches in a raucous third round that saw Arreola land 14 power punches to Ruiz’s 13, according to CompuBox. Ruiz adjusted as the fight went on, and found success scoring with body shots and combinations punctuated by a punishing sweeping left hook. Ruiz owned a 106 to 75 advantage in power punches landed and built up his lead on the cards by landing 161 of his 626 punches thrown, to Arreola’s 109 landed and 521 thrown. Arreola appeared to hurt his left arm in round eight, but was able to manage any pain enough to continue throwing bombs until the final bell. Ruiz punctuated his performance with a strong final round, clinching his victory in the WBA Heavyweight Title Eliminator by the scores of 117-110 and 118-109 twice in the eyes of the judges. "I respect the judges, but I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” said Arreola. “He might have won, but don't tell me I only won two or three rounds. I got hit in the shoulder and it kind of threw it off. It wasn't a big deal though. It's a part of boxing. I didn't take too much punishment. I'm ready to run it back with Andy." "I felt a little rust and I know other fighters can relate to that,” said Ruiz. “If he wants to run it back, we'll run it back with him." #RuizArreola #RuizArreolaHighlights #AndyRuizJr Visit PremierBoxingChampions.com for more info. (August 5, 2016) David Benavidez went deeper into a fight than he had ever been before the 19-year-old power puncher earned a 10th-round TKO of southpaw Denis Douglin in a 168-pound bout at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia. Douglin (20-5, 13 KOs) was able to smother the 6-foot-2 Phoenix native for much of the fight despite giving away six inches in height, but Benavidez (16-0, 15 KOs) finally broke through with a knockdown in Round 9 before gaining the stoppage in the final frame. “I knew it was going to be a tough fight. I knew he wasn't going to go out without a fight,” said Benavidez, who is trained by his father, Jose Benavidez Sr. “I came in here and started slower than I usually do, just using my jab a little bit more. I hurt him a lot of times, but I kept my cool. I knew I was going to get him out of here sooner or later, and that's exactly what I did tonight.” Benavidez’s length and power really began to take their toll on Douglin in the ninth, when the teen landed a left uppercut to begin a four-punch volley that dropped the 28-year-old southpaw with 15 seconds left in the round. It was more of the same to begin the 10th as Benavidez punished Douglin with an array of uppercuts and hooks before referee Gary Rosato stepped in and stopped the fight 35 seconds into the round. "I was in this fight, I just got winded. I was in great shape and everything, but I got winded there towards the end,” said Douglin, who is trained by his mother, Saphya, and nicknamed “Momma’s Boy.” "Benavidez is a tough, young fighter. He was able to make me stay in there longer than I wanted to, but I feel good and I'll be back." It was the eighth straight knockout for Benavidez, but just his fourth time fighting past four rounds, eclipsing his seventh-round TKO of previously unbeaten Francy Ntetu in June as the longest fight of his career. Douglin controlled the first couple rounds of the fight as the Marlboro, New Jersey, resident worked inside against his much taller opponent and landed some solid shots as he was able to position Benavidez against the ropes. Benavidez began to alternate from orthodox to southpaw after that and dug in for a pair of body shots before landing a mouthpiece-jarring right hand in Round 6. Midway through the seventh, Benavidez bounced against the ropes and nearly collapsed to the canvas as the support for the top rope came unattached and had to be repaired, causing a 2½-minute delay. With Rosato holding the ropes at times afterward to negate the weight of the fighters, Benavidez started to wear down Douglin, who was stopped for the fourth time in his career. “It was important to me to get the stoppage and show everybody that I am just as strong in the late rounds as I am early on,” Benavidez said. “I love this. This is what I signed up for. I want tough fights. This is a good victory for me. “Douglin is a tough veteran. He started fast and swinging wildly, and his offense probably looked better on camera than it was, but he did what he had to do to survive until the final round.” #BenavidezDouglin #DavidBenavidez #DenisDouglin Visit PremierBoxingChampions.com for more info. (March 2, 2019) Former 154-pound world champion Erislandy Lara and WBA Super Welterweight Champion Brian Castaño fought to a highly competitive split-draw Saturday at Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING™, in an event presented by Premier Boxing Champions. With the draw, Castaño retains the WBA belt in what was the toughest test of his career against the longtime top 154-pounder in Lara. The judges scored the fight 115-113 (Castaño), 115-113 (Lara) and 114-114. Castaño (15-0-1, 11 KOs), who was fighting in his first U.S. main event, held a large advantage in power connects (181-103) while Lara (25-3-3, 14 KOs) found success landing his left hand down the middle on his way to a 34 percent to 27 percent advantage in power accuracy. In the close, difficult-to-score fight, five of the rounds were separated by three or fewer connects and three of those rounds favored Lara. In the final two rounds, Castaño ramped up the pressure and connected on 44 punches, while Lara landed only 24 punches across the championship rounds. Castaño won the final three rounds on all three judges' scorecards. Without doing so, the Argentine would have lost his belt. After the hotly contested fight, both fighters have options, including a rematch, in the talent-rich super welterweight division. "I know I won the fight. I feel I was robbed," a disappointed Castaño told SHOWTIME's Jim Gray. "If he wants the rematch, I'll give him the rematch. I waited for him this time so I can wait for him again if he wants the rematch. I would give him the rematch if he wants. I can also go ahead and fight any other champion that wants to fight me. I'm ready for whoever they put in front of me. Hurd or anyone else." Lara, on the other hand, felt he did enough to claim the belt: "I thought I won the fight by landing the more accurate and effective punches. Castaño came to fight but he never hurt me and I hurt him. All I can do is give the fans great fights and that's what I'll continue to do. I have a lot of fight left in me and I'm not going anywhere. "If we have to fight him again, I'll fight him. Hurd or Castaño. Anybody, I'll have the rematch with both." #LaraCastano #ErislandyLara #BrianCastano Visit PremierBoxingChampions.com for more info.
