'In any club like this there are problems,' were the words from Barcelona manager Quique Setién as he weighed in on the fallout between Lionel Messi and sporting director Eric Abidal. The former Barcelona defender has sparked fury after he blamed the players for the sacking of former manager Ernesto Valverde, saying: 'Lots of players were not satisfied [with Valverde] and nor did they work a lot.' In response, Messi posted on social media, saying: 'I think that when players are talked about, names should be given because, if not, we are all being dirtied and it feeds comments that are made and are not true' Subscribe to Guardian Football ► http://is.gd/GuardianFootball Barcelona in meltdown after Lionel Messi hits back at Eric Abidal ► https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/feb/04/barcelona-meltdown-lionel-messi-eric-abidal Support the Guardian ► https://support.theguardian.com/contribute The Guardian on YouTube: The Guardian ► http://www.youtube.com/theguardian Guardian Sport ► http://bit.ly/GDNsport Guardian News ► http://www.youtube.com/guardianwires Owen Jones talks ► http://bit.ly/subsowenjones Guardian Culture ► http://is.gd/guardianculture
Barcelona were plunged into crisis when Lionel Messi publicly called out the sporting director Eric Abidal, challenging him to name names and accusing him of tarnishing the players’ reputation. Abidal claimed Barcelona’s players had not been happy with Valverde, who was sacked on 13 January, and that they had not been working hard enough under their former manager. In response club captain Messi took to social media, saying: 'I think that when players are talked about, names should be given because, if not, we are all being dirtied and it feeds comments that are made and are not true.' Ajax and Heracles players stood still for the first minute after kick-off, as part of an anti-racism protest across the Netherlands' top two divisions. The protests came after Excelsior player Ahmad Mendes Moreira was subject to racist abuse by Den Bosch supporters. A message reading 'Racism? Then we don't play football' was displayed on the screen at the Johan Cruyff Arena. With the scores still 0-0 in the 60th minute, Nuneaton Borough called upon an unlikely player to take a penalty in their Southern Premier Central clash with Stratford Town – step forward goalkeeper Tony Breeden. Subscribe to Guardian Football ► http://is.gd/GuardianFootball The unusual choice did not pay off, with Breeden hitting the penalty high and wide into the stands, smashing a light in the process. The miss did not prove too costly for Nuneaton, who won 2-0 thanks to a goal from defender Joel Kettle and a late penalty from Callum Powell, with Breeden standing at a safe distance at the other end of the pitch this time. Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka will not play against Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday, but head coach Unai Emery refused to discuss the issue at his press conference, calling for "100%" focus on the match. Xhaka remonstrated with supporters as he was jeered leaving the pitch during Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace last Sunday. The midfielder cupped his ears, removed his shirt and batted away Emery's hand as he left the pitch, leaving his position as captain in doubt. A goal from behind the halfway line is a rare sight in football, yet in the J2 League in Japan Montedio Yamagata managed to score two of them in 90 seconds. The two strikes from the home side caught the Ehime goalkeeper Masahiro Okamoto off guard on Sunday. The goals were scored by Shun Nakamura and Tatushiro Sakamoto. Yamagata went on to win 3-0 Subscribe to Guardian Football ► http://is.gd/GuardianFootball Watch more from the amazing world of sport series ► https://www.theguardian.com/sport/series/amazing-world-of-sport Support the Guardian ► https://support.theguardian.com/contribute The Guardian on YouTube: The Guardian ► http://www.youtube.com/theguardian Guardian Sport ► http://bit.ly/GDNsport Guardian News ► http://www.youtube.com/guardianwires Guardian Culture ► http://is.gd/guardianculture
