There were scary scenes in the stands during a Dutch top flight game on Sunday as Vitesse fans caused a section to collapse as they celebrated their side's victory over NEC. The Arnhem outfit beat NEC 1-0 away, with Nikolai Baden Frederiksen scoring the only goal of the game in the first half. After the final whistle, the Vitesse players went over to celebrate with their travelling supporters at the Stadion Galfort However, the joyous scenes briefly came to a halt as their bouncing up and down caused the stand to suddenly give way. Many at the front fell downwards, with the players looking concerned. Fortunately nobody was injured in the incident despite looking like it could have been nasty. And as soon as that was confirmed the fans got back underway with their celebrations. #footballindepth #vitesse #eredivisie #NEC
Newcastle’s game against Tottenham Hotspur was suspended after a fan collapsed in the stands. Newcastle officials confirmed the supporter has been “stabilised” and taken to hospital as the game continued after a 25-minute pause in the game. Tottenham were leading 2-1 before Sergio Reguilon pointed into the crowd in the east stand at St James’ Park. While referee Andre Marriner spoke to stewards in the stand, Tottenham defender Eric Dier ran into the dugouts to seek assistance from club staff. Not long after the stadium announcer said: “Please bear with us there is a medical emergency in the East Stand. We will give further details as and when but please bear with us.” Five minutes passed by before Marriner spoke to stewards again to assess the situation. He then made the decision to suspend the game and asked the players to make their way down the tunnel. The stadium announcer confirmed the players would come out to resume the first half — of which there were seven minutes remaining. The players were given a couple of minutes to warm up before play resumed. The supporter received huge amounts of applause as they were carried out of the stadium. Newcastle took the lead in the opening two minutes through a diving header by Callum Wilson. Tanguy Ndombele equalised for Tottenham 15 minutes later. Harry Kane scored his first Premier League goal of the season to give the visitors the lead before the game was stopped. #footballindepth #newcastle #tottenham #newtot #newcastleunited #tottenhamhotspur #spurs #coys
Hungary supporters clashed with police at Wembley as a fan was arrested for racist abuse of a steward during Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against England. England manager Gareth Southgate branded the ugly clashes "unacceptable", while England defender Tyrone Mings called for harsher punishments for racism in football. Just moments after kick-off, trouble flared among the pocket of around 1,000 Hungarians in one corner of Wembley. Dozens of Hungary supporters charged at stewards, who were forced to retreat before police wielding batons arrived. The fighting continued for several minutes before riot police finally restored order in the stands and the stadium concourse. The incident occurred when police moved in to arrest one Hungary fan for a racist comment to a steward. Hungary's supporters also booed when England players took the knee before kick-off and held up a banner protesting against the anti-racism gesture. "I was aware of a disturbance. It sounds like it was not acceptable but I haven't seen the detail," Southgate said. Mings added: "Every time we speak on racial abuse the punishments that follow never seem in line with what has happened. "I sincerely hope that if that is the case, the punishments fall in line with what happened this time." Hungary manager Marco Rossi refused to condemn the fans, saying: "I don't want to comment about this situation. "It is not my task. Everything I could say could be interpreted in a different way, so I prefer no comment." The Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest on their Twitter account "Shortly after the start of tonight's match at Wembley, officers entered the stand to arrest a spectator for a racially aggravated public order offence following comments made towards a steward," a statement said. "As the officers made the arrest, minor disorder broke out involving other spectators. Order was quickly restored and there have been no further incidents at this stage." The English Football Association said they would report the incident to FIFA and launch an investigation of their own. "We will be investigating and will report the incident to FIFA," an FA statement said. It was not the first time Hungary fans had caused problems during their meetings with England in the qualifying campaign. England's 4-0 win in Budapest in September was marred by racist chants from Hungarians aimed at Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham. Missiles were also thrown at England's players at the Puskas Arena. Hungary were ordered to play two home FIFA competition matches behind closed doors, one suspended for two years, following the racist behaviour. UEFA had already told Hungary to play one game behind closed doors following racist abuse from supporters and homophobic banners in the stands during their Euro 2020 matches in Budapest. Wembley had also been the scene of crowd disorder just months ago when England's defeat against Italy in the final of Euro 2020 was marred by ticketless fans storming the gates to gain entry. Thousands of fans managed to break through Wembley's under-staffed security cordon before the final, while drunken supporters caused havoc outside the stadium hours before kick-off #footballindepth #england #hungary #fa
At first look, the forward appeared offside as he sprinted past the Spain back line before scoring past Unai Simon Kylian Mbappe's 80th-minute winner for France in the Nations League final against Spain on Sunday was fiercely protested by the opposition but ultimately allowed to stand. Spain contended that Mbappe was offside before receiving the breakaway pass - and he certainly appeared to be at first glance - but referees determined defender Eric Garcia's touch of the ball as he tried to make a last-ditch interception was enough to put the attacker onside. Spain captain Sergio Busquets said after his 2-1 defeat that the explanation he received "doesn't make sense". "Mbappe was offside, but the referee said that Eric went for the ball and that this started a new phase," Busquets told RTVE. "That makes no sense, though. He went to try to cut the ball out because Mbappe was there and he assumed Mbappe was onside, so he did what any defender would have done in trying to cut it out." MARCA's refereeing expert Alfonso Perez Burrull didn't understand the decision either and questioned why the UEFA broadcast didn't show an offside line to make it clear that Mbappe was ahead of the last defender when the pass was initially played. "What's incredible is that they didn't trace a line when he seems to be in a clearly offside position," the former referee said on Radio MARCA during the match. "Mbappe interferes with play and is offside. That's true even with a touch from the Spaniard." #footballindepth #mbappe #nationsleague #spainvsfrance #kylianmbappe #uefa #VAR
Stade Velodrome became a battleground between Marseille and Galatasaray supporters on Thursday, with scenes in the stands forcing the referee to stop play. The Europa League match was paused for nine minutes as flares and other objects flew from all sides as the visitors clashed with their hosts. The action was suspended from the 37th minute, when Galatasaray boss Fatih Terim and Fernando Muslera joined Dimitri Payet in attempting to cool tensions. Riot police were deployed and charged into the stands, clearing the trouble so the first-half could get going again. The match was goalless at half-time and neither side could find a goal in the second, ending 0-0 to leave the French side still winless in Group E. Marseille have been at the heart of a violent return of fans to Ligue 1 stadiums this season, with Thursday's Europa League drama the latest of many incidents. Dimitri Payet was floored by a bottle thrown from Nice's end during a French league clash between the French Riviera rivals back in August, sparking a melee which forced the game to be abandoned at the 75th minute. The fixture will be replayed at a neutral venue next month. Fans will be shut-out then, and Nice are currently serving a punishment of three additional behind-closed-doors matches. Marseille supporters have also now been banned from attending away matches until further notice. They stormed the pitch after the final whistle of the Cote d'Azur club's 0-0 draw with Angers, as ugly scenes of fighting unfolded. The embarrassment has caused Ligue 1 to also close part of Angers' stadium, with Marseille fans forced to wait for the conclusion of an investigation to find out when they can return to away fixtures. #footballindepth #marseille #galatasaray #ultras #UEL #europaleague #OMGS
Ugly scenes marred West Ham's 2-0 win over Rapid Vienna in the Europa League on Thursday after crowd trouble broke out between rival fans. The first incident during the game broke out in the visiting supporters' end after Declan Rice put the Hammers in front at the London Stadium in the first half. Some away fans tried to storm the home section after the goal, jumping the barriers before being forced back by stewards with the help of the police. Both sets of supporters were seen lobbing objects at each other, including a giant bottled water cooler. West Ham defender Aaron Cresswell also had a few objects thrown at him when he took a corner late in the first half. The trouble began before the match when the away fans antagonised the West Ham supporters and threw bottles at the home section right before a light show at the London Stadium ahead of kick off. The trouble then cranked up after Rice gave West Ham the lead and the home fans began taunting their Austrian visitors, who threw more bottles in response. There were more outbreaks of violence at full-time and riot police were called in to bring an end to the melee. West Ham coach David Moyes said he had seen some of the trouble from pitchside while urging fans to control themselves and protect the club's reputation on the continent. 'I was aware of some things being thrown,' Moyes said. 'We want to be a club regularly in Europe and because of that we want to behave correctly. 'I don't know who started it but we don't want that reputation, we want to be seen as a club who can travel to Europe and everybody welcomes us.' Crowd trouble was a common occurrence when West Ham moved to the London Stadium in 2016, with violence breaking out in Premier League matches against Watford and Middlesbrough. Things came to a head in a League Cup win over Chelsea that same year, when the opposing fans pelted each other with coins and seats were ripped out of the stadium. #footballindepth #westham #rapidvienna #UEL #ultras #declanrice
Neal Maupay scored a dramatic late equaliser for Brighton in the derby and his jubilant celebrations sparked anger from Crystal Palace goalscorer Wilfried Zaha Neal Maupay has explained why Wilfried Zaha confronted him following the conclusion of Brighton ’s dramatic 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on Monday night. Maupay scored in the 95th minute to earn Brighton a point at Selhurst Park and his goal sparked fiery scenes on and off the pitch. Palace looked to have victory in their grasp thanks to Wilfried Zaha’s first-half penalty following a clumsy tackle by Leandro Trossard on Conor Gallagher in the box. But the hosts were made to pay for Jordan Ayew’s poor finish from a clear opening when Vincente Guaita’s late goal kick led to Maupay’s late goal. Joel Veltman volleyed Guaita’s scuffed kick back over the Palace defence and the Frenchman raced through to lob the Palace keeper and level the derby. He celebrated by cupping his ears to the furious home supporters in a clear reference to Zaha’s actions following his well-taken spot-kick in first-half injury time. However, Maupay did not seem too concerned when he was asked to explain what had happened by Thierry Henry in a Sky Sports post-match interview. Palace’s James McArthur and Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez were both booked for their involvement in a tussle which involved several players from both teams. Meanwhile, there were angry scenes in the stands as Palace supporters goaded the away team as they attempted to get down the tunnel. #footballindepth #crystalpalace #brighton #maupay #wilfriedzaha #CRYBHA
Footage has emerged of Paul Pogba responding brilliantly to abuse from West Ham fans after Manchester United's late win at The London Stadium earlier today.
