The last time Zimbabwe toured Sri Lanka they won a 5-match ODI series 3-2. Craig Ervine and Co. now stand a chance to make consecutive series wins on Sri Lankan soil. What an achievement that would be for the tourists. Their machine looks well-oiled too. The batting has clicked and got them almost 300 in both games this far. The bowling looked very good and was able to extract whatever minimal help the surface was offering. After the second ODI, Ervine opined the team is happy with its combination so we are unlikely to see any changes barring injuries. The Sri Lankan seamers were also not up to the mark, unlike Zimbabwe's pacemen who struck crucial blows. Zimbabwe's batting in the second game resembled close to their efforts in the first, which was adequate, but they might yet hope for that bit extra in the death overs, having managed 69 and 70 respectively in the last 10 overs of the two matches. A sickening injury-time goal deprived 10-man Arsenal of taking anything from a highly-charged New Year's Day clash against City at the Emirates. Bukayo Saka fired us ahead during a superb first-half display, but the game was completely turned on its head during a crazy five-minute spell after the interval. Manchester City were awarded a controversial penalty, Gabriel Martinelli missed an open goal and Gabriel was sent off, all in the space of a few minutes, and in the end our defensive efforts against 11 men were in vain when Rodri scrambled home in injury time. Looking for our first league win over Manchester City since 2015, we set about the task from the first whistle, and were on top during the first half. We had conceded inside the opening quarter of an hour in each of our previous five home Premier League meetings with City, but we gave as good as we got in the first 15 minutes this time - and more. But the first chances went to the visitors. Gabriel made a crucial tackle to deny Raheem Sterling inside the box before Gabriel Jesus headed wide. We were seeing plenty of the ball though and had a very strong penalty appeal turned down by referee Stuart Attwell, who was centre of attention for much of the afternoon, when Ederson appeared to trip Martin Odegaard in the box. Some wonderful work from Thomas Partey - dominant in the middle of the pitch - created a chance for Gabriel Martinelli, only for his shot from a tight angle to be blocked. Of course City's forward players were a constant danger, but we were looking the more likely scorers, and just after the half hour we got our reward. A fine passing movement began with Ben White stepping in to win the ball, then moving it quickly to Partey, to Odegaard then to Kieran Tierney. The full back rolled his pass across the box and Saka finished superbly first time into the bottom corner. Another rapid passing move stretched the opponents out of shape, resulting in Martinelli curling just over from 20 yards, with the keeper beaten. Just before the interval the Brazilian again went close, with an effort that would have been a goal of the season contender had it nestled in the net. Picking the ball up in the left flank, he ran at the City defence, in to the box, then poking a shot just wide when he looked to have been crowded out. Then the game flipped completely in a five-minute spell early in the second half. And it was a controversial moment ten minutes into the second half that brought the champions level. Bernado Silva went down inside the area under the challenge of Granit Xhaka. The referee was well placed and waved away the initial appeals, but after consulting VAR, the spot kick was given. Riyad Mahrez stepped up and converted from 12 yards to make it 1-1. We could have been back ahead instantly, only for Nathan Ake to clear off his own line from an overhit backpass, and Martinelli missed the follow up with the goal at his mercy. It would get worse seconds later. Gabriel - booked for protesting the penalty award - was then sent off for a foul on the halfway line. The momentum had completely changed in the space of a few minutes. With Mikel Arteta at home, isolating after testing positive for covid, his assistant Albert Stuivenberg took over on the touchline ,and he had to make several adjustments to deal with the numerical disadvantage. City obviously monopolised possession from that point on, but the defence stood firm, the midfield looked organised, and our forward players ran their socks off. It all came to nothing though, when Rodri poked home from close range at the death. 1971-Bears vs. Lions (Chuck Hughes Death) (WJR Radio)
-In the history of the NFL, only once has a player died on the playing field during a game. It happened 50 years ago in 1971 when Chuck Hughes of the Detroit Lions collapsed and died of a heart attack during the final minutes of a game between the Lions and Bears at Tiger Stadium. "On October 24, Hughes took the field to play the last few moments of the Lions’ game against the Chicago Bears. He caught one pass for 32-yards, absorbing a big hit, and then returned to the huddle. A few plays later, after running a decoy route, the receiver collapsed. “Dick Butkus, Chicago linebacker, was the first to reach him and called for the Lions’ doctors from the sidelines,” the New York Times reported. Those efforts, however, were in vain. “The stunning development sent Lions’ players from the team dressing room in tears,” the report continued. “Some muttered, ‘He’s dead, he’s dead.’ At Henry Ford Hospital, where he was taken, Hughes was pronounced dead at 4:41 PM.” This is the Lions radio broadcast from WJR-Detroit, called by Van Patrick and Bob Reynolds. You can hear their stunned reaction to events as they realized the seriousness of it, though the report on Hughes' death would not take place until after the broadcast was over. The CBS telecast of the game does not exist and NFL Films has never shown any footage of the tragedy if any exists. The next night on Monday Night Football during the halftime highlights show, Howard Cosell somberly noted the events without showing any footage during the recap of the Bears-Lions game. Mais ses bonnes prestations de la saison passée ont convaincu le nouveau maître à bord, Joan Laporta, de renouer le contact pour verrouiller au plus vite une prolongation. C’était sans compter sur les désirs de l’intéressé. Dembélé veut toucher le jackpot grâce aux Magpies Depuis plusieurs mois, le clan Dembélé discute avec les Blaugranas. Obligés de composer avec une crise financière conséquente, les Culés ont offert à leur numéro 11 un bail jusqu’en 2025 avec un salaire en baisse (Dembélé perçoit actuellement presque 10 M€ par an, ndlr). En vain. Ce qui a eu le don d’agacer le Barça qui s’est depuis mis en quête d’un successeur. De son côté, le champion du monde 2018 est maître de son destin. Et selon nos informations, les nouveaux propriétaires de Newcastle pourraient bien profiter de sa situation contractuelle pour négocier un contrat très juteux. Nous pouvons vous affirmer en effet que Dembélé, qui plait aussi à Manchester City, discute avec les Magpies les contours d’un bail de cinq ans assorti d’un salaire annuel de 15 M€, soit plus que ce qu’il touche en Catalogne. Et son futur statut de joueur libre en 2022 le met plus que jamais en position de force puisque nous pouvons vous indiquer également que le Français demande une prime à la signature de 15 M€. Des tarifs face auxquels le Barça ne pourra pas s’aligner.
