There was one where Tasmania and New South Wales found it difficult to put any runs on the board while the other one came for a lot of praise from all concerned. The pitch for the Test is yet to be used and carried a green tinge to it on the eve of the match. The fact that we haven't started with talking about the Sydney weather is a positive sign that the forecast has improved slightly but expect rain to play a role over the next five days as is the norm at the SCG. Team News Australia Selection will be a hot topic in two weeks time when they reconvene to build-up to the first Test against the West Indies. But for now, Australia seem more settled than ever before, ironically with one big name set to be playing his last Test. Playing XI: David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood Pakistan Shaheen Shah Afridi bowled for quite a while two days out from the Test. And it's quite the story that Pakistan have decided to leave him out for the last Test, just when he seemed to be coming into his own at the MCG. Shan Masood even spelt out how impressed he was with his left-arm ace in his press conference on Tuesday (January 2), but it's a rather weak pace attack that the Aussies will go up against in Sydney. Maybe it's the number of overs he's bowled that's convinced the Pakistani selectors to give him a break. That opens the door for Sajid Khan, who was a late inclusion to this squad, to play the specialist spinner's role alongside Agha Salman, who's done a reasonable job with the ball. Ayub's selection is of course the more exciting pick. Playing XI: Saim Ayub, Abdullah Shafique, Shan Masood (c), Babar Azam, Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Agha Salman, Hasan Ali, Sajid Khan, Aamer Jamal, Mir Hamza

And the forecast for the opening two days isn't very flash either with regards to skies clearing up. The expectation, or hope, is that Christmas eve and Christmas day got the worst of the showers and that it should clear up come the Test match. But rain delays and breaks seem inevitable on Boxing Day and even a bit on Day 2. The pitch for a change isn't as green as it has been in recent years with only 6 mm grass on it. But there should still be enough for the Australian fast bowlers in particular to get a lot out of, even if the Pakistani batters should find runs easier to come by as compared to Perth. It's been a while since a Test here went to Day 5. The weather forecast, more so than the opposition, looks likely to take us there this time around. Team News Australia Following his match-winning 164 there was no fuss or scrutiny on David Warner, who had a lengthy hit two days out from the Test before spending Christmas with his family. And for once, even Cummins didn't hesitate to reveal the playing XI and it being unchanged from what we saw last week in Perth. Playing XI: David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins (c), Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood Pakistan As is the case when things don't go Pakistan's way, they only get worse. And after an impressive debut, Khurram Shahzad has flown back home along with Noman Ali who suffered from acute appendicitis. Abrar Ahmed continues to remain unavailable for selection, which means Sajid Khan could be in line for a recall after having been flown in at the last minute before the first Test. Neutral cricket fans will celebrate the return of the popular Mohammad Rizwan behind the stumps in place of veteran Sarfaraz Ahmed. All-rounder Faheem Ashraf has been left out of the 12 that Pakistan have named following his unimpressive outings with bat and ball. The only toss-up for the visitors will be whether to play Sajid as the specialist spinner and pick between Hasan Ali and Mir Hamza, or play both fast bowlers and stick with Agha Salman as the lone spin option. Probable XI: Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique, Shan Masood (c), Babar Azam, Saud Shakeel, Muhammad Rizwan (wk), Agha Salman, Hasan Ali, Aamer Jamal, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mir Hamza/Sajid Khan

But they will be looking make the best use of that. Getting a top quality replacement key here. Even though first XI is fairly settled CSK want a pace bowling allrounder who seamlessly fit middle order to replace Moeen in games that aren't played in Chepauk. Gujarat Titans: How do you fill the gap left by Hardik Pandya In terms of leadership Shubman is going to take charge but what Hardik allrounder brings will be very hard to replace. There aren't many Indian out who can bowl pace bat at 4/5. Shankar will have to step up but Titans will be eyeing overseas seam bowling allrounder in all likelihood. Lucknow Super Giants: The decision to acquire Padikkal makes sense now that Rahul is looking to establish himself in the middle order in T20 cricket as well. That move would bolster LSG's middle order they definitely need a backup Indian batter or two. While they have promising fast bowlers like Mohsin LSG would likely target experienced Indian seamer to bolster that attack especially after the departures of Unadkat Avesh. Punjab Kings: Punjab Kings do have a fairly settled first choice XI at their disposal but lack of quality Indian batters a backup will be a cause concern. They would ideally like one overseas backup batter well having released Rajapaksa. Rahul is the only wrist spinner in entire squad there is a lot of reliance on him to pick wickets in the middle overs. Kolkata Knight Riders: With a strong Indian core in the batting department KKR have other areas to focus. Their openers Gurbaz Roy have been a bit inconsistent so they might another overseas opener to challenge the duo. But definitely need least one solid overseas keeper a local keeper in that squad. KKR don't have any experience apart from Russell. Delhi Capitals: With doubts persisting over Rishabh Pant's ability to keep wickets in the tournament Delhi Capitals would want another keeper apart from Porel in the squad. DC's biggest issue has been the lack of reliable finishers. Given they might also need a keeper someone like Josh Inglis will be a useful addition given his flexibility with the bat. Mumbai Indians: Hardik's return makes them look very strong but they have one glaring weakness in that spin department. Chawla and Kartikeya have been decent but everything points towards one huge attempt to add Hasaranga to their ranks. It won't be easy given they have multiple players to be added to their squad with a small budget. Royal Challengers Bangalore: A proven overseas fast bowler and a good overseas spinner will be on the agenda having released Josh Hazlewood and Hasaranga. Shahbaz departure will make them target Indian spinner as well. Vyshak had his moments last time but Patel's exit might force the thinktank to opt for another Indian pacer. Rajasthan Royals: Safe to say Royals have almost all bases covered and have a strong bowling attack. They might look to strengthen the squad by adding a couple of allrounders though and a backup Indian batter. Buttler's impact at the top of the order is hard to replicate. So getting a solid backup for the Englishman will be on their agenda as well. Sunrisers Hyderabad: Given the fact that they have a solid squad SRH can go big on a couple of top players pretty easily. An upgrade on Marco Farooqi is definitely possible. If not an overseas gun pacer SRH can definitely go big on overseas spinner to bolster that spin attack. Wanindu Hasaranga is up for grabs. One game at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in 2018 was abandoned due to rain. Matthew Wade, who last played for Australia at the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, will lead a 15-member squad. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Green and Marnus Labuschagne, who were part of the ODI World Cup squad, have been rested. David Warner, who was initially part of the T20 squad, will return home for a break. Kane Richardson has been named as a replacement for Spencer Johnson, who has a hamstring injury. Both teams missing some key players may not be a bad thing because it will allow them to test those who are otherwise on the bench. In the absence of Rohit Sharma, India’s regular skipper in the shortest format, and the injured Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav will be the stand-in captain. Axar Patel, who was ruled out of the ODI World Cup with quadriceps strain, is back in the mix. Ruturaj Gaikwad will be the vice-captain for the first three games. Shreyas Iyer, who will join the squad for the last two matches, will take over from Gaikwad. VVS Laxman will be the head coach as Rahul Dravid is due for rest after a jam-packed three months. The selectors, who met in Ahmedabad on Monday and finalized a 15-member squad, picked 11 players from the group that clinched the Asian Games gold in October.
