We kicked off our preparations for the 2023/24 season with a 1-1 draw with training ground neighbours Watford at London Colney on Saturday, thanks to a second-half equaliser from Marquinhos. Mikel Arteta named a strong starting XI, consisting of the players who returned to training at the start of the week, before turning to his youth players in the second-half. We had an early chance to take the lead in the behind-closed-doors friendly, but a dangerous cross into the box from Reiss Nelson ended up in the hands of Watford keeper Daniel Bachmann. The visitors responded, pressing high up the pitch, but 17-year-old midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly was positioned well to halt Ken Sema’s burst into the box. Late in the half we had a couple of chances to take the lead. First Eddie Nketiah found himself through on goal, but the striker was denied by a last-gasp challenge from the covering Watford defender. Not long after, a low driven pass from Gabriel through the middle, fell to the feet of Nketiah but his shot was blocked. From the resulting corner, Leandro Trossard’s delivery into the box caused confusion, before it was eventually cleared for a throw in. We were made to pay when Watford broke the deadlock just before the whistle - Ismael Kone on the scoresheet. With building up fitness naturally a key priority, the manager made wholesale changes at the break, with nine players replaced. A much younger side opened the second half with an early opportunity to equalise through Mika Biereth, but the 20-year-old striker’s shot on goal was comfortably dealt with. However we drew level 10 minutes after the restart. Rob Holding started the move, finding Biereth, whose pass freed Amario Cozier-Duberry. The winger’s shot was saved but only pushed into the path of Brazilian forward Marquinhos, who coolly slotted home the rebound. Both teams contested fiercely for the winner, but the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Starting XI: Arthur Okonkwo, Ben White, Gabriel, Rob Holding, Cedric, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Leandro Trossard, Reiss Nelson, Mauro Bandeira, Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah. Subs: James Hillson, Marquinhos, Mika Biereth, Amario Cozier-Duberry, Jimi Gower, Jack Henry-Francis, Alex Kirk, Brooke Norton-Cuffy, Ethan Nwaneri, Ismail Ouland-M’hand, Charles Sagoe Jr, Lino Sousa, Reuell Walters. #arsenal Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Emile Smith Rowe, Vivianne Miedema, Gabriel Jesus, Alex Zinchenko, Leah Williamson, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White and more. It was a six-goal thriller and after 90 minutes we looked to have sealed an incredible and richly-deserved three points, only for league leaders Manchester City to score twice in injury time in a 3-3 draw. A brace from Mika Biereth and a first-half strike by Lino Sousa, along with a stunning display in goal by Hubert Graczyk, looked to have silenced the high-flying visitors with a stunning second-half show. But it wasn't to be and despite the late goals, Biereth almost snatched a late winner, only for his shot to fly over as he was left punching the turf in frustration. Head coach Kevin Betsy brought back Hutchinson and Charlie Patino into the starting XI but this contest started sedately as both teams looked intent on keeping possession. It was City who had the first sniff at goal with a long-range shot by Romeo Lavia with Graczyk smothering the ball smartly. Defence soon turned into attack and we had the crucial opener on 11 minutes. There may have been a slice of luck involved but Sousa won’t mind as his clipped cross from the left looped over the keeper into the net. Hutchinson continued to torment the visitors as we pressed for a second, but it was City who broke through and found themselves level just seven minutes later. Skipper Liam Delap beat the offside trap down the middle and slotted in the equaliser past the out-stretched Graczyk. Patino, Sousa and Hutchinson all provided some spark as we tried to wrestle back control, and although City dominated with the ball, Zane Monlouis and Jonathan Dinzeyi stood resolute at the back to keep the visitors at bay. The scores were level at the break but it could have been so different as Graczyk performed more heroics between the posts to claw away a low rasping shot from Oscar Bobb. How crucial that save proved to be. It was a timid start to the second half, but the noise soon cranked up as we regained the lead six minutes in. After winning a free-kick outside the box, the increasingly influential Hutchinson delivered a delicious ball into the box, and as City’s defenders flapped, Biereth pounced to poke in from 10 yards. City were wobbling while Hutchinson was buzzing and we almost grabbed a third with Miguel Azeez smashing a free-kick from outside the box against the left post. Hutchinson was everywhere and with cracks appearing in the blue defence, the 18-year-old surged forward with the ball stuck at his feet and his powerful shot was parried away by keeper Cieran Slicker. The game was fizzing from one end to the other and City showed they were still dangerous as James McAtee was put through, only for the impressive Graczyk to come to the rescue again with an athletic low save. A third goal did finally come on 75 minutes to relieve the pressure as Biereth fired in a penalty after the striker was hauled down. With legs tiring and a two-goal cushion, Betsy introduced Joel Ideho, Nathan Butler-Oyedeji and Omar Rekik. Delap then gave City hope with a blast from the edge of the box and in the sixth minute of injury time there was heartache for us as McAtee slammed in from a tight angle to level the scores. There was still time for Biereth to have one last chance but his shot blazed over as the sides had to settle for a draw. #arsenal #biereth Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Nikita Parris, Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi, Jordan Nobbs, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White, Thomas Partey and more. We showed incredible fighting spirit to take three points in our Premier League Cup group with a 3-2 win over Southampton. The match got off to the worst possible start for us, falling behind after just four minutes, Caleb Watts cutting inside from the right and his strike going in off the post past Ovie Ejeheri. Joel Ideho restored parity midway through the first half, spotting Ollie Wright off his line and producing a remarkable chip over him from outside the box. We found ourselves trailing again right on the stroke of the break after a Southampton penalty, Olaigbe converting his spot-kick in off the bar. Kevin Betsy brought on extra firepower in the form of Mika Biereth midway through the second half, a change that made a stark difference to our attacking output. Folarin Balogun drew us level with his 16th strike of the season, cutting inside from the left and firing past Wright at his near post after some great work by Joel Lopez in the build-up. Our comeback was complete just moments later, Biereth receiving the ball from Ideho and producing a brilliant turn and finish to give us the lead 10 minutes before the end. Balogun and James Olayinka both had chances to add a fourth well saved by Wright in the closing stages, as the home side appeared stunned by our latest turnaround. #arsenal #balogun #biereth Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Emile Smith Rowe, Nikita Parris, Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi, Jordan Nobbs, Bukayo Saka, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White, Thomas Partey and more.
