Mike Tyson vs. Frank Bruno I: The Fight That Almost Shocked the World On February 25, 1989, Mike Tyson stepped into the ring against Frank Bruno at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas. At 22 years old, Tyson was an unstoppable force—undefeated, undisputed heavyweight champion, and fresh off a dominant win over Michael Spinks. Bruno, the powerful British contender, was seen as just another victim. But for a brief moment, he made the world believe an upset was possible. From the opening bell, Tyson came out like a wrecking ball, launching his signature hooks and uppercuts. Bruno had barely blinked before he was on the canvas. The fight looked like it would be another quick Tyson demolition. But Bruno refused to be steamrolled. He got up, steadied himself, and moments later, shocked everyone—landing a clean left hook that wobbled Tyson. It was the first time fans saw the young champion truly stunned. But Tyson was built differently. Recovering almost instantly, he resumed his relentless assault, trapping Bruno against the ropes and unloading vicious combinations. The challenger survived, holding and clinching whenever possible. Bruno had heart, but Tyson had fury. By the fifth round, Bruno was a battered mess, barely standing as Tyson unleashed one final flurry. The referee had seen enough, stopping the fight as Bruno sagged against the ropes. It wasn’t Bruno’s night, but he earned respect by hurting the seemingly invincible Tyson. Still, it was another emphatic win for “Iron” Mike, who cemented his status as the baddest man on the planet.

But the Bambino was more than numbers – especially to those who knew him, like former teammate Joe Dugan, who once said: “To understand him you had to understand this: He wasn’t human.” Sports writer Tommy Holmes, winner of the 1979 BBWAA Career Excellence Award, was more succinct: “Some 20 years ago, I stopped talking about the Babe for the simple reason that I realized that those who had never seen him didn’t believe me.” Ruth has been called an American original, undoubtedly the game’s first great slugger and the most celebrated athlete of his time. Soon after honing his skills at St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys in Baltimore, he came to the big leagues as a lefty hurler with the Red Sox, where he won 89 games in six years while setting the World Series record for consecutive scoreless innings. But the Red Sox recognized Ruth's ability at the plate and began transitioning him to the outfield. In 1918, the Red Sox won their fourth World Series title in seven seasons – Ruth was there for three of them – as Ruth led the American League with 11 home runs while also going 13-7 on the mound. Then in 1919, Ruth set a new single-season record with 29 home runs while recording 113 RBI. He went 9-5 on the mound in his last year with more than two appearances as a pitcher. In what is likely the most famous transaction in baseball history, Red Sox owner Harry Frazee sold Ruth to the Yankees for $100,000 following the 1919 season. The next season, Ruth hit 54 home runs with 158 runs scored and 135 RBI, setting the baseball world ablaze with his talent. He would top those numbers in 1921 with 59 home runs, 177 runs scored and 457 total bases. The last two numbers still stand as modern era (post 1900) records. The Sultan of Swat would lead a powerful and renowned New York squad to seven American League pennants and four World Series titles during his 15 years in New York. He led the AL in home runs 12 times, including his record-setting 60 in 1927 – a mark that stood for 34 years. Ruth retired in 1935 after a partial season with the Boston Braves, ending his 22-year big league career with 714 home runs. His lifetime statistics also include 2,873 hits, 506 doubles, 2,174 runs, 2,214 RBI, a .342 batting average, a .474 on-base percentage and a .690 slugging percentage. “It wasn’t that he hit more home runs than anybody else,” said 1976 Spink Award winner Red Smith, “he hit them better, higher, farther, with more theatrical timing and a more flamboyant flourish.” Among Ruth’s other remarkable offensive achievements include leading the league in slugging percentage 13 times, bases on balls 11 times, on-base percentage 10 times, runs scored eight times and runs batted in five times. One of the first five electees to the Baseball Hall of Fame, Ruth once said, “The fans would rather see me hit one homer to right than three doubles to left.” Ruth passed away on Aug. 16, 1948. Prizefighting returned to CBS on Saturday, June 25, 2016, with a Fight of the Year candidate as undefeated welterweight world champion Keith Thurman edged former world champion Shawn Porter in a close but unanimous decision scored 115-113 by all three ringside judges. The 12,718 fans in attendance at Barclays Center in Brooklyn and the viewers across the U.S. watching the first primetime boxing event on CBS since Muhammed Ali-Leon Spinks in 1978 were treated to a slugfest between two of the brightest stars in boxing’s glamour division. Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) and Porter (26-2-1, 16 KOs) combined to throw over 1200 punches in the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on CBS event, presented by Premier Boxing Champions. The marquee showdown was a story of accuracy vs. activity, as Thurman landed 50 percent of his power shots, compared to 38 percent for Porter, and 44 percent of his total punches compared to just 36 percent for the challenger. While Thurman landed at a higher percentage, Porter was the busier fighter, throwing over 100 more punches across 12 rounds. “One Time” and “Showtime” delivered as advertised, with the powerful sharpshooter buckling Porter multiple times, while the swarming and smothering Porter barreled forward to bully Thurman into the ropes. And while there were no knockdowns, the back-and-forth blockbuster never lacked action and culminated in a standing ovation in the second-highest attended boxing event in Barclays Center history. "I want to thank Shawn Porter for a tremendous fight. He's a great warrior,” said Thurman. “Defense is the key to victory. He smothers his punches a lot and makes it difficult for the judges to score. I was able to rock him with clear, effective blows and I believe that was the difference today. “I would give him a rematch. It was great fight. He was a great opponent. Everyone was saying would he be my toughest opponent to date. I wasn’t able to drop him but I did buckle him a few times.” The former world champion Porter, a perennial underdog but consummate gentleman, didn’t complain about being on the losing end of his second close decision in a title bout. “We worked hard, Keith is a great champion,” Porter said. “My dad says to keep your head up. I think I won the fight, but I'm satisfied because the competitor came out tonight. "We need that rematch. I know the fans want that rematch.
