The United will now clash with Lahore Qalandars in eliminator 2 tomorrow (Friday) — and the winner of the match will face Multan Sultans in the final. In the last over, United required 10 runs, and Azam Khan got out on the first ball, after that, Liam Dawson finished the thrilling clash with ease as he smacked a six and four on the next two balls. The do-or-die match between the two teams was a see-saw battle with both teams unwilling to give up till the very end. The Zalmi bowlers were on target with their line, as they removed opener Will Jacks for 11 runs. Alex Hales announced his return with a bang as he kept the run-chase intact and played according to the situation. United was cruising at one stage with Hales looking well set, but it was Salman Irshad's two wickets that brought Zalmi back into the game. He removed Hales with a brilliant yorker and took the wicket of dangerous-looking Shadab Khan for 22 runs and Asif Ali, who was on seven. Azam Khan who scored 28 runs with two sixes and Faheem Ashraf who notched 19 with two maximums brought United closer. But in the last over when 10 runs were required, Azam got out on the wrong time, but Liam Dawson finished the game with hits. In terms of bowling, Wahab Riaz was taken to the cleaners as he conceded 52 runs in four overs, while Salman registered figures of 3-31. Earlier, after deciding to bat first, Peshawar Zalmi scored 169 runs for the loss of five wickets. The United bowlers kept things tight as Zalmi batters didn't score runs quickly, as they lost in-form opener Mohammad Haris for 12 runs by Faheem Ashraf. Opener Kamran Akmal continued to carve out runs, while Yasir Khan was also removed for eight runs. Karman got out for 58 runs by United skipper Shadab Khan with Zalmi's score of 98 runs on the board. Shoaib Malik and Hussain Talat forged a crucial 56 runs stand to take Zalmi to the 150 run mark. Hussain scored 28 runs, while Malik scored 55. For United, Hasan Ali took three wickets for 30 runs in four overs, while Shadab and Faheem picked one. Chasing a huge 186-run target, Gladiators batters failed to play a huge knock with Jason Roy departing for 13, James Vince got out for a duck. Apart from Smeed, it was Sarfraz Ahmed who scored 25 and forged a 53-run stand with Smeed. Iftikhar Ahmed scored 10, while Umar Akmal managed to score just one as Smeed remained the difference between the two teams as his miraculous knock almost pulled off a stunning win. Smeed continued his hard-hitting by smashing the Zalmi bowlers to all parts of the park by hitting three sixes and 12 fours in a 60-ball knock. He took the game deep as the 17th over of Salman Irshad was going well with two fours, but the turning point came when Salman took his wicket on the last ball of his over as Smeed remained just one run shy of a much deserving century. After his departure, all the hopes for Quetta dashed as Zalmi bowlers easily defended the runs. For Zalmi, leggie Usman Qadir was the pick of the bowler with brilliant figures of 3-25 in four overs. Liam Livingstone picked 1-24 in four overs, while Wahab, Talat, and Slaman also took one scalp each. Earlier, Zalmi handed a 185-run total for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs courtesy of Shoaib Malik and Hussain Talat's fifties and late hitting by Ben Cutting in a fiery 36-run knock. Zalmi skipper Wahab Riaz had won the toss and elected to bat first, but Quetta's pacer Naseem Shah did the early damage with two wickets in one over of Hazratullah Zazai and Liam Livingstone to leave Zalmi at 2-6. Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Haris forged a 52-run stand to hold the inning, while Malik showed his class and experience during the 58 run inning of 41 balls with eight fours. He also laid a good 73-run stand with Hussain Talat who also played well. While in the late over, Cutting launched an onslaught with four sixes and one four in a blistering 36 run inning off just 14 balls. Naseem was brilliant with the bowl as he registered figures of 4-27 in four overs, Shahzad, Iftikhar, and Mudassar took one scalp each. The teams aim at removing ifs and buts from their way to the playoffs of the ongoing tournament. Both the teams have six points from seven games each, but Gladiators are ahead of Zalmi based on net run rate (NRR) and currently placed at the fourth position in the points table. After being invited to bat, in-form Lahore Qalandars handed a 183-run target to unbeaten Multan Sultans, but the Mohammad Rizwan-led side could not live up to the situation as they were defeated by 52 runs. Lahore Qalandars' bowling attack shined against Multan Sultans as they managed to bowl out the defending champions for 130. 20-year-old Zaman Khan claimed three wickets and gave away only 21 runs in 3.3 overs. Skipper Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Rashid Khan took two wickets each to dismantle Multan Sultans batting line-up. Rashid Khan took two crucial wickets of Mohammad Rizwan and Rilee Rossouw. With the win, Lahore Qalandars have moved to second position in the table. Qalandars' Fakhar Zaman had lit the Gaddafi Stadium with his exceptional knock against table-toppers Multan Sultans, scoring a quick 37-ball 60 runs. The Gladiators suffered a huge blow earlier today after Nawaz was ruled out of the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) due to an injury. Nawaz has suffered a navicular bone nondisplaced fracture. The Qalandars had set a 200-run target for Peshawar after Wahab Riaz opted to bowl first against Lahore. Early in the Peshawar innings, Lahore skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi set the tone for his team by dismissing Zalmi opener Hazratullah Zazai for zero in the third ball of the innings. The loss of the early wicket put Zalmi on the backfoot and regular wickets by Lahore never allowed Peshawar to take control of the game. For Zalmi, Kamran Akmal and Haidar Ali made 41 and 49 runs, respectively, but the team was unable to catch up to the high required run rate. Zaman Khan took three wickets for Lahore, while skipper Shaheen and David Weise took two wickets each. Rashid Khan took a wicket as well. Zalmi ended their 20 overs with 170-9 helping Lahore register a 29-run victory. Peshawar would have been all out in the last over had David Weise's hattrick wicket not overturned by the review. Earlier, Lahore openers Fakhar Zaman and Abdullah Shafique set the tone for Qalandars' batting as they took the Peshawar Zalmi bowlers to the cleaners. Fakhar made his third successive fifty-plus scores by reaching his half-century in the 10th over. However, in the same over, Usman Qadir dismissed Shafique for 41 runs to break the opening stand. Fakhar continued his attack on the Zalmi bowlers before being dismissed by Hussain Talat in the 13th over for 66. By the time the left-hander was dismissed he had given the platform to his team to set up a huge target for Peshawar. In the next few overs, Kamran Ghulam, Mohammad Hafeez, and Rashid Khan’s cameo propelled Lahore to end their innings at 199-4. For Peshawar, Salman Irshad took two wickets while Usman Qadir and Hussain Talat picked one each.
