The return of David Silva and Fernandinho helps Manchester City to important win over

Subscribe to our channel: https://goo.gl/pqS0mLThe return of David Silva and Fernandinho helps Manchester City to important win over Southampton. Manchester City have looked unrecognisable over the past week. About as unrecognisable as David Silva with a head of hair again. The Premier League champions toiled without being able to call on Silva or Fernandinho from the start, it becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish how they were attempting to control games in midfield. There lacked a link with the front three, a worrying reliance on individualism; effectively, an antipathy to how Pep Guardiola wants to play the game. His hamstring injury left City bereft of ideas. Fernandinho’s absence left them without their fulcrum: two gaping holes no team in this division could adequately plug in tandem. There remain fitness concerns and a victory down at Southampton will not change the feeling that City are stretched to the maximum ahead of that game on Thursday night, which they prepare for as underdogs. You cannot overlook the defensive mistakes, the difficulties Oleksandr Zinchenko and Danilo suffered, and Guardiola will doubtless fret about the prospect of meeting Liverpool without a recognised left back. Yet this result resembled something of a reboot, City rediscovering an element of zip, a more cohesive unit with arguably their two most important men back. Fernandinho is understated, the sort of quietly dependable character who never forgets to take the bins out. In this case, he is the quietly dependable player who refuses to deviate from his station. That offers City a base they simply do not have otherwise and it became even more blindingly obvious during those ruinous Christmas defeats. Perhaps, in hindsight, Guardiola should have made more of a fuss with the board when they missed out on Jorginho in the summer and insisted on an substitute. None of Fernandinho’s alternatives – Ilkay Gundogan, John Stones or Danilo – are particularly adept at holding a three together. City still insist January will not bring about new signings and Guardiola appears set to muddle on in the hope Fernandinho does not enter the red zone as he did earlier in the month. Little wonder the manager went apoplectic when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scythed into the Brazilian late on, a straight red card and the tackle heavy enough for Fernandinho to come off straight away. Apart from his positional sense, there comes added trust when Fernandinho anchors. City are liberated, owning a confidence to take more risks while safe in the knowledge he will happily bail them out otherwise. A failure to create many meaningful opportunities against Crystal Palace and Leicester City was in part a product of defensive insecurity. It is more what he does without the ball but Fernandinho also has no issue gathering possession in tight spaces, as evidenced when he pierced Southampton from his own third after Ederson had diced with disaster inside City’s six-yard box with Zinchenko and Vincent Kompany. One comes with the other where Fernandinho and Silva are concerned. This is their sixth season together, telepathy clear. Silva flourishes with him – scoring the opener, creating four chances, his pass completion touching 90 per cent. He might look like a new man but City realise the value of their old guard.

Bayer Leverkusen 1 Bayern Munich 3: James Rodriguez, Franck Ribery and Javi Martinez goals see leaders go 14 points clear at top. FRANCK RIBERY showed Bayern Munich why the Bundesliga leaders should extend his contract as the 34-year-old netted a superb goal in Friday's 3-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen. The away victory -- Bayern's first at Leverkusen since 2013 -- leaves them 14 points clear and on course for a sixth straight Bundesliga title as the German league resumed after the winter break. Both Ribery and Bayern's other veteran winger Arjen Robben, 34, are out of contract in June and the pair hope to be offered extensions in the coming weeks. Ribery, who has spent a decade at Bayern, rolled back the years by scything through Leverkusen's defence and slamming home Bayern's superb second goal.

Sale Sharks 27-19 Newcastle Falcons | Aviva Premiership Rugby Highlights Round 11 | 26-12-11

Macleod kicks Sharks up to third Nick Macleod won the kicking battle as Sale beat Newcastle to return to the Aviva Premiership Rugby play-off positions and leave their opponents at the foot of the table. Sale had taken a 16-0 lead after 24 minutes through three Macleod penalties and a converted Tom Brady try, but Newcastle mounted a comeback. After Macleod and Jimmy Gopperth had traded further three-pointers, substitute Jeremy Manning went over to reduce the gap to 19-10 at half-time. Gopperth continued to boot the Falcons back into the game and narrowed the gap to three points before England wing Mark Cueto touched down to effectively seal the win. The Sharks have arguably been Aviva Premiership Rugby's surprise package this season by playing with endeavour and pace, and that was perfectly illustrated in the opening moments. Despite Newcastle having most of the early play, it was Sale who drew first blood through Brady. Corne Uys' departure had already caused a back line reshuffle when the youngster took advantage of the Falcons' midfield confusion. And after receiving a static pass from Dwayne Peel, the winger broke the gain line before darting fully 60 metres to touchdown for a superb individual score. Macleod added the extras before kicking a superb long-range penalty to open up an early 10-point lead after eight minutes. Newcastle continued to have most of the territory but it was Sale who were taking advantage of the visitors' poor discipline. From a scrum penalty, an area of weakness for the Sharks in the previous couple of seasons, Macleod slotted his second three-pointer. He then added another from the tee before Newcastle eventually got on the board. Recent signing Suka Hufanga's scything break into the hosts' 22 was unceremoniously ended by a high tackle. And Gopperth kicked the resulting opportunity, but the Kiwi's opposite number responded immediately with his fourth penalty. To their credit, the Falcons continued to press and were rewarded when Manning barrelled through three would-be tacklers to score in the corner. Gopperth scuffed the conversion but it managed to sneak between the uprights as they deservedly got themselves back into the game at the break. The second period continued in the same vein as the first with Sale attempting to play from deep, and it nearly paid off when James Gaskell off-loaded to prop Alasdair Dickinson, but the move broke down in the opposing 22. However, the Falcons carried on their impressive recovery when Gopperth kicked his second penalty. Another one followed as the Sharks were seemingly starting to do what they did against Exeter and concede a sizeable lead. But naivety from Newcastle on their own put in at the scrum saw Sale steal the ball and feed it out to Cueto who showed excellent footballing skills to touch down. Gopperth reduced the arrears with a penalty, but Macleod added another to seal the win and leave Newcastle in perilous danger at the foot of the table. http://www.premiershiprugby.com/home.php Premiership Rugby on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/PremiershipRugby Follow us on Twitter http://twitter.com/premrugby

Newcastle Falcons 16-16 Worcester Warriors - Aviva Premiership Rugby Highlights Round 8 | 04-11-11

Falcons fight back to snatch late draw Newcastle snatched a dramatic draw in their Aviva Premiership Rugby basement battle with Worcester at Kingston Park. In front of a crowd of 7,013, the Falcons were trailing 16-9 with three minutes to go and looking a poor second to the Warriors but suddenly the Newcastle pack found another gear and drove Mike Mayhew over for a try which Jimmy Gopperth converted to level the match. Worcester had opened the scoring with a Joe Carlisle penalty after five minutes when Ally Hogg strayed offside but Hogg made amends with a pulverising drive which Jamie Helleur and Crone Uys carried on to win a penalty which Gopperth knocked over for 3-3 after 12 minutes. Carlisle's high kick was taken by Greg Goosen but the Warriors pack turned it over and Newcastle were offside again for Carlisle to put Worcester back in front at 6-3 in the 20th minute. But Worcester conceded a soft penalty at the line-out two minutes later and Gopperth levelled the scores. Newcastle were struggling to find any distance with their kicks and an appalling slice from Rikki Sheriffe allowed Worcester to drive into the Falcons 22 and Shaun Perry looped around Carlisle with the fly-half offloading in the tackle for Perry to score, and Carlisle's conversion in the 27th minute put the Warriors 13-6 ahead. Newcastle tore into Worcester early in the second half to gain a penalty after seven minutes which Gopperth kicked for 13-9 to give the Falcons hope. Alex Tait scythed through the Warriors defence and a try seemed certain but Uys just failed to hold the pass which Tait popped up as he was hauled down inside the 22. With 12 minutes left Andy Goode kicked a 45-metre penalty which looked to be the final act until that dramatic match-saving effort from the Falcons.
