SRI LANKA SQUAD - 19 member Sri Lanka probable squad for the test series against india
Sri Lanka has named uncapped off-spinner Ashian Daniel and leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay in a 19-man squad for their two-match Test tour of India early next month. The series, which includes a day-night Test, will begin on March 4 in Mohali before the teams head to Bengaluru for the second Test, a day-night game starting on March 12. The match in Mohali will be Sri Lanka’s 300th Test match. Wicketkeeper batter Niroshan Dickwella is also back in contention for a place for the first time since May last year while senior batter Lahiru Thirimanne returns to the side, having taken paternity leave during Sri Lanka’s last Test series against West Indies. However, there were no places for Oshada Fernando, Minod Bhanuka, Kamil Mishara, Roshen Silva, Ramesh Mendis, Lakshan Sandakan, Suminda Lakshan, Asitha Fernando and Chamika Gunasekera who were with the national team during the series against West Indies in November. Daniel, who celebrates his 21st birthday today, was a former Sri Lanka Under-19 cricketer from St. Joseph’s College and fared decently during the National Super League (NSL) limited-over tournament, claiming 10 wickets in three games. Representing Team Kandy, he made an early impression, picking up 5 for 27 against Jaffna. Sri Lanka probable final 22-member Sri Lanka squad for the forthcoming South Africa white-ball series. Last week, it was reported that the national cricket selectors had announced an initial 30-player squad for the Protea series, scheduled to start on 2 September Only Tharanga and the 21-year-old off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana have been retained from the uncapped players in the initial 30-member squad. The other four uncapped players in the initial squad — Dilshan Madushanka, Ishan Jayaratne, Shiran Fernando, and Sahan Arachchige — have not been picked for the 22-player final squad for South Africa. Also going out from the 30-player squad are Ashen Bandara, Lakshan Sandakan, Asitha Fernando, and Dhananjaya Lakshan, all current national players. Former Sri Lanka Captains Dinesh Chandimal and Suranga Lakmal last played for Sri Lanka during the March and April West Indies tour. Then they were dropped for the following Bangladesh, England, and India white-ball series when the selectors opted to apply a ‘youth policy’ aiming the 2023 50-over World Cup. The same time, former ODI Captain Dimuth Karunaratne too was omitted from the national white-ball side along with the other seniors.
