There was one where Tasmania and New South Wales found it difficult to put any runs on the board while the other one came for a lot of praise from all concerned. The pitch for the Test is yet to be used and carried a green tinge to it on the eve of the match. The fact that we haven't started with talking about the Sydney weather is a positive sign that the forecast has improved slightly but expect rain to play a role over the next five days as is the norm at the SCG. Team News Australia Selection will be a hot topic in two weeks time when they reconvene to build-up to the first Test against the West Indies. But for now, Australia seem more settled than ever before, ironically with one big name set to be playing his last Test. Playing XI: David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood Pakistan Shaheen Shah Afridi bowled for quite a while two days out from the Test. And it's quite the story that Pakistan have decided to leave him out for the last Test, just when he seemed to be coming into his own at the MCG. Shan Masood even spelt out how impressed he was with his left-arm ace in his press conference on Tuesday (January 2), but it's a rather weak pace attack that the Aussies will go up against in Sydney. Maybe it's the number of overs he's bowled that's convinced the Pakistani selectors to give him a break. That opens the door for Sajid Khan, who was a late inclusion to this squad, to play the specialist spinner's role alongside Agha Salman, who's done a reasonable job with the ball. Ayub's selection is of course the more exciting pick. Playing XI: Saim Ayub, Abdullah Shafique, Shan Masood (c), Babar Azam, Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Agha Salman, Hasan Ali, Sajid Khan, Aamer Jamal, Mir Hamza

And the forecast for the opening two days isn't very flash either with regards to skies clearing up. The expectation, or hope, is that Christmas eve and Christmas day got the worst of the showers and that it should clear up come the Test match. But rain delays and breaks seem inevitable on Boxing Day and even a bit on Day 2. The pitch for a change isn't as green as it has been in recent years with only 6 mm grass on it. But there should still be enough for the Australian fast bowlers in particular to get a lot out of, even if the Pakistani batters should find runs easier to come by as compared to Perth. It's been a while since a Test here went to Day 5. The weather forecast, more so than the opposition, looks likely to take us there this time around. Team News Australia Following his match-winning 164 there was no fuss or scrutiny on David Warner, who had a lengthy hit two days out from the Test before spending Christmas with his family. And for once, even Cummins didn't hesitate to reveal the playing XI and it being unchanged from what we saw last week in Perth. Playing XI: David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins (c), Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood Pakistan As is the case when things don't go Pakistan's way, they only get worse. And after an impressive debut, Khurram Shahzad has flown back home along with Noman Ali who suffered from acute appendicitis. Abrar Ahmed continues to remain unavailable for selection, which means Sajid Khan could be in line for a recall after having been flown in at the last minute before the first Test. Neutral cricket fans will celebrate the return of the popular Mohammad Rizwan behind the stumps in place of veteran Sarfaraz Ahmed. All-rounder Faheem Ashraf has been left out of the 12 that Pakistan have named following his unimpressive outings with bat and ball. The only toss-up for the visitors will be whether to play Sajid as the specialist spinner and pick between Hasan Ali and Mir Hamza, or play both fast bowlers and stick with Agha Salman as the lone spin option. Probable XI: Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique, Shan Masood (c), Babar Azam, Saud Shakeel, Muhammad Rizwan (wk), Agha Salman, Hasan Ali, Aamer Jamal, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mir Hamza/Sajid Khan

One between Australia and Pakistan is going on amidst the rain threat at the famous MCG while the other is all set to take place at the SuperSport Park in Centurion between the hosts South Africa and India. This is the opening Test of the two-match series and two teams are getting ready for a battle of the pacers. Mukesh Kumar is seen bowling on the side pitch. The wet patches are being dried using a hair-dryer. The festive season is in the air and as we eagerly await the arrival of the New Year it's time for some serious business on the cricket field. Following the conclusion of the limited-overs series South Africa and India now meet in the highly anticipated Freedom Trophy. The two-match Test series begins with the Boxing Day Test at SuperSport Park in Centurion before the action shifts to Cape Town for the second and final Test. This series marks the start of South Africa's Test Championship cycle and they will be looking to start the campaign with a win. The Proteas will be led by their permanent Test captain Temba Bavuma and he will be keen to lead by example throughout the series. The hosts have a lethal pace attack in Gerald Coetzee Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi. Keshav Maharaj is the lone spinner in the squad while Nandre Burger. Wiaan Mulder and Marco Jansen form the all-rounder options. The bowling line-up seems settled but the batting will be put to the test in this series. All eyes will be on Dean Elgar who has decided to hang up his boots after this series and will be hoping to end his career on a high. Alongside Elgar and Bavuma Aiden Markram will have to shoulder the responsibility while Tony de Zorzi and Keegan Petersen are among. Rohit Sharma Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill will form the core of India's top order while Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer will solidify the middle order. In all likelihood KL Rahul will don the gloves in what will be his first Test since February 2023. Ravindra Jadeja is always a force to be reckoned with with the ball and he also makes his presence felt with the bat more often in Tests than in the two white-ball formats. In the bowling department. The last time these two sides met in a Test series in the Rainbow Nation India came very close to creating history but South Africa recovered from an early setback to win the series 2-1. The stage is set for what promises to be a real cracker of a series between two giants. Who are you backing to land the first blow in this Boxing Day Test? It is confirmed now- Krishna is debuting for India in Test cricket. He receives his Test cap from the Bumrah. Pitch Report | Shaun Pollock: "It's a decent grass covering and South Africa is hoping for some movement. However they prefer to bat first since the pitch tends to slow down and become unpredictable as the game progresses. Considering the anticipated weather conditions it wouldn't be surprising if they opt for a spinner. With a significant amount of expected rain the playing conditions are unlikely to undergo substantial changes. Winning the toss and capitalizing on the initial period would be crucial." Ravi Shashtri: "Opt for batting first and endure the initial two hours. Even if you find yourselves two wickets down by lunch you'll be well-placed to reach a total of 280 or 290. Despite the seemingly green pitch there's more to it than meets the eye and persistence is key. Given the prevailing weather conditions consider fielding three fast bowlers an all-rounder and a spinner." Virat Kohli Rahul Dravid and Jasprit Bumrah are bowling on the side pitch now.
