PHILADELPHIA — Kyle Postma passed for 226 yards and a touchdown, and the Houston defense made three interceptions in a 20-13 victory over Temple on Saturday. Houston's defense held Temple to 324 total yards, including 142 rushing. Garrett Davis intercepted two of Logan Marchi's passes and Isiah Johnson grabbed the other. Postma, making his first start since Sept. 10, 2016, also gained 81 yards on 15 carries. He started for Kyle Allen, who did not play because of a coach's decision after starting the first three games of the season. D'Eriq King scored on a 13-yard run to open the scoring for Houston (2-1, 1-0 American). Postma, who was 25 of 36 with an interception, hit Linell Bonner on a 9-yard scoring strike to make it 20-0 in the third quarter. Temple (2-2, 0-2) had its best offensive performance in an 11-play, 85-yard drive capped by Marchi's 1-yard scoring pass to David Hood, on fourth-and-goal in the fourth quarter. Marchi was 20 of 41 for 182 yards passing. Aaron Boumerhi kicked a 41-yard field goal. Visit TheAmerican.org for more information.

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Ex-Texas A&M quarterback Kyle Allen threw for 225 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted twice in his first game for Houston and the Cougars had to hold on to beat Arizona 19-16 in their week-delayed season opener on Saturday night. Houston (1-0) gave Major Applewhite a victory in his head coaching debut a week after the scheduled opener at UTSA was canceled due to Hurricane Harvey. John Leday's 81-yard kickoff return set up Houston's go-ahead touchdown with 45 seconds left in the first half. Josh Pollack kicked three field goals for Arizona (1-1), the last, from 42, yards cut the lead to 19-16 with 8:32 to play. Khalil Tate replaced Arizona quarterback Brandon Dawkins early in the fourth quarter and the Wildcats were at the Houston 32 when Garrett Davis' interception with 3:49 remaining preserved the win. Dawkins, who returned for the final three minutes, fumbled the ball away twice, one for a safety, in the second half. Allen, one of the nation's top recruits from suburban Phoenix in 2013, started 14 games and played in 20 for Texas A&M before transferring to Houston. He sat out last season as a redshirt. Allen, who completed 25 of 32 passes, threw 49 yards to Keith Corbin to set up his first TD pass as a Cougar, five yards to Linell Bonner to put Houston up 10-3 with five minutes left in the half. Arizona, helped by a pass interference penalty in the end zone, tied it 10-10 on Zach Green's 1-yard run 2:22 before halftime. Leday took the subsequent kickoff and the last man who had a chance to stop him, Kwesi Mashack, tackled him at the Wildcats 16. Dillon Birden's 3-yard touchdown run with 45 seconds gave Houston its 17-10 halftime lead. Visit TheAmerican.org for more information.

UH rallies to beat Memphis, stay undefeated: Backup QB Postma has hero's role as Cougars erase 20-point deficit http://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/cougars/article/UH-rallies-to-beat-Memphis-stay-undefeated-6633430.php By Joseph Duarte Sports Reporter, Houston Chronicle With one epic fourth-quarter comeback, Kyle Postma wrote his name in University of Houston football lore Saturday night. The backup quarterback scored on a 7-yard run with 1:27 remaining as the No. 16 Cougars rallied from a 20-point deficit for a 35-34 victory over No. 25 Memphis before a record crowd of 42,159 at TDECU Stadium. The third-largest comeback in school history was not sealed until Memphis kicker Jake Elliott missed wide right on a 48-yard field-goal try with 19 seconds left. Elliott had field goals of 41 and 29 yards in the first half. "It was really neat to see the look in our team's eyes never giving up," UH coach Tom Herman said. UH is 10-0 and at 6-0 remained in a first-place tie with Navy in the American Athletic Conference West Division. Postma entered the game just before halftime when starter Greg Ward Jr. injured his ankle. He led the Cougars on their only score of the first half, added another to begin the third quarter and engineered 21 points in the final 12:56. "I didn't think anybody batted an eye when we put him in the game," Herman said. Down 34-14, the Cougars began the comeback on a 10-yard touchdown run by Kenneth Farrow. UH took advantage of one of Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch's few mistakes, an interception by linebacker Elandon Roberts near midfield that set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Javin Webb. With job secure, Miles all smiles as LSU tops A&M Men's basketball: UH tops Louisiana-Monroe Comeback takes shape UH's defense forced a quick three-and-out to give the Cougars another shot with four minutes left. On third-and-8, Postma found Demarcus Ayers, who had 13 catches for 127 yards, across the middle for a 15-yard gain and Postma followed with a 22-yard scramble. Postma and Ayers connected again, this time for 12 yards, and two plays later safety Chris Morley was called for pass interference in the end zone. On the next play, Postma rolled to his right, found a hole and scored as the Cougars pulled off their biggest comeback since rallying for 25 points in the fourth quarter to beat Pitt in the Armed Forces Bowl last January. "Gutsy," Herman said of Postma. "He's a pretty unflappable kid." Few could have expected the latest twist in Postma's whirlwind ride. Two years ago, Postma was a walk-on for the Cougars. In search of playing time, he transferred to Trinity Valley Community College and went 12-0 as the starter last season. Postma's ascension Two months ago, Postma was UH's third-string quarterback. He then moved to wide receiver. Finally, he returned to backup quarterback after a season-ending knee injury to Adam Schulz. Saturday night, Postma starred in one of the biggest wins in the last 30 years for the program. Man of the hour In place of Ward, Postma was 21-of-33 for 236 yards and had a hand in two touchdowns. "It's still indescribable," Postma said. "I still don't know how to put this all into words. It's crazy." Houston struggled for most of the first half and Ward left with an ankle injury after being sacked for the fifth time with 1:21 remaining before halftime. UH punted on its first six possessions and did not cross midfield until 4:30 remained in the second quarter. UH had 99 yards of total offense in first half - 75 on the final drive, which was capped by a 30-yard touchdown pass from Postma to Linell Bonner. Herman said UH played "tight and tentative" on offense in the first half. "Things looked pretty bleak," Herman said. Farrow scored on a 7-yard run on the Cougars' opening drive of the second half, but Memphis answered with touchdown runs by Doroland Dorceus and Tevin Jones. Dorceus had a game-high 116 yards rushing on 26 carries.
