Kenyan track and field athletes put up impressive performances in the second edition of the Kip Keino Classic held at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Saturday. At the African continent's only World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting, attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta, Kenyans Philemon Kiplimo (10,000m), Margaret Kipkemboi (5,000m), and Celliphine Chespol (3000m) won their respective races. Other winners included Vincent Keter and Faith Kipyegon (1500m), Noah Kibet and Mary Moraa (800m) as well as Vanice Kerubo and Nicholas Kiprotich (400m hurdles) while star sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala broke his 100m national record by finishing second behind American Tryvon Bromell. The success of the Absa Bank sponsored global event, that attracted over 180 athletes from across the world, adds to the growing profile of Kenya as the preferred destination of global sporting events, having successfully hosted the World Athletics Under-20 Championship, Deaflympics Africa ball qualifiers and WRC Safari Rally among other international events in recent months.
