India are wonderfully placed at the start of day two. However there was a bit of wobble early in their innings after electing to bat first. They lost Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) Shubman Gill (0) and Rajat Patidar (5) in quick succession as they were reduced to 33/3 in the ninth over. Skipper Rohit was joined by Jadeja and both led the recovery work. The pair of Rohit and Jadeja held the innings nicely. The Indian skipper was dropped by Joe Root at first slip early in the innings and he pounced on the opportunity. He made sure that the English side pays a heavy price as he brought up his ton. Rohit and Jadeja put 204 between them before the former fell on 131. In walked debutant Sarfaraz and he played positively from the word go. Sarfaraz notched up a beautiful half-century in his debut innings and looked settled for a big score before being run out on 62. Jadeja brought up his century and remained unbeaten on 110 along with night-watchman Kuldeep Yadav (1*) as India finished day one on 326/5. Mark Wood has picked up three scalps for the English side. The second new ball is just three overs old and the visitors will look to make full use of it early on day two. Jadeja looked solid at the crease on day one and will be looking to go big and score a daddy hundred today. The English side meanwhile will be looking to pull back things by picking regular wickets on day two. his brings 3000 runs Jadeja in Test cricket. the pads on a fuller length Ravindra Jadeja waits flicks it through deep mid-wicket for a boundary. Vikram Rathour (India batting coach): "There were a few jitters with the scoreboard reading 33/3. I won't be lying. But that can happen on the first day on a fresh wicket. A couple of good balls. So yeah there were a few jitters but the way two pros batted it was really good to see. The dropped players do understand that the team management is really backing the players and giving them enough opportunities. But we have to go with what the team needs at certain times. In case of Axar that was the real case. But on this surface we thought we needed a wrist spinner who can turn the ball a little more. Bharat is a tough one actually. He is being doing well. He got a few opportunities but really couldn't convert those starts. I thought the team management decided to go with some change. We always knew that Sarfaraz can play spin well. But it was good to see him do that on this occasion and this stage." Pitch Report (Deep Dasgupta and Nick Knight): Deep Dasgupta: "As observed yesterday there is nothing for the bowlers apart from the first hour or so. Good pitch to bat on. What we have one day two I have got Nick Knight here with me. Nick what's your assessment for day two?" Nick Knight: "Well not different from what we saw yesterday. The only difference I see is that the cracks are a bit larger here. It's dried out. There is enough in the pitch to hold it together and it will be another good day for batting. Jadeja breaches the 100 finally! A sensational innings from the southpaw at his home ground. It's essentially a good pitch to bat on. But with cracks this big and they are opening up there will be an odd ball that will misbehave. A lot of the English bowlers bowled round the wicket yesterday so there is a rough there for maybe Ashwin to bowl into. But even if we talk a lot about it it's still a good pitch to bat on." Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. The 'Moving Day' lived up to expectations as the game ebbed and flowed to leave us with all four results possible with two days remaining in the Test. Considering England's 'Bazball' approach it will not be a surprise if the Test does not go into the fifth day and we get the result on Day 4 itself. On the other hand England will fancy their chances of chasing this mountain of a target going into Day 4. On Day 3 it was all set up by James Anderson in the first half hour before the spinners came to the fore to not let the game drift away from them. Although the visitors lost Ben Duckett before the close of the play and there are doubts over Joe Root's participation due to a finger injury England have ample firepower in the shed to get the remaining 332 runs. The first hour will be pivotal and could heavily influence the outcome of the Test. Who will blink first on Day 4? India's outing on Day 3 was headlined by Shubman Gill but the rest of the batting unit's performances left a lot to be desired. At one stage in the game on the third day they looked to be on course to take their lead over 400 but a bizarre passage of play after Tea saw their innings meander and eventually they were bowled out setting England a target of 399. The hosts have the runs on the board but will still be wary of England's ability to pull off big chases. Given their efforts with the ball in the first inning Rohit Sharma and his men start as slight favourites to win the Test from here more so with the surface expected to deteriorate. India's centurion of the second inning Shubman is in for a chat. He says that it was a good effort today but they could gotten more runs on the board. He talks about the early LBW review going his favour which gave him confidence. He mentions that wicket an easy one bat as the odd ball is keeping some them turning sharp. He ends saying that his father comes to watch most games he actually feels good when he is there watching. When asked about the situation of the game he responds by saying that it still looks 70-30 in favour of India but England have batting to chase. Pitch Report (Dinesh Karthik and Eoin Morgan): Dinesh Karthik: "It's day four of the fantastic Test match. All three days so far have produced different variants for bowlers and the batters. We have Eoin Morgan here. Please take it away." Eoin Morgan: "Good morning DK and to everyone. Of all the days played so far I think this is the most significant pitch report we will do today. We have seen a couple of balls with some variable bounce off spinners and seamers. When you land the ball short of a good length there is a huge crack amongst all of the cracks. Bumrah got a couple of balls to move and shoot low. It was challenging for Crawley yesterday. There is an absolute spider web of cracks today. Predominantly that crack will interest the English batters right-handed batters in particular." Dinesh Karthik: "Joe Root turns one big against Yashasvi Jaiswal. There is an effect of cracks for the spinners as well. If you look at the right-handed batters if I bend forward and look there are a few cracks here that India will be looking to exploit. The question is can the Indian bowlers keep plugging at it or will it be the day when England bring out their sweeps and reverse-sweeps and trouble the Indian bowlers just like they did in Hyderabad?" Five times in fact since 2000. But only the great Australian team of 2004 had the legs to see an early lead to a series win. That's how hard it is to keep throwing punches in these conditions without copping them back with interest. Even in this decade of impregnability India have found ways to overturn early deficits. In Bengaluru they produced a clinic in attractional bowling. Four years later in Chennai they went the other way and raged on a raging turner. And so on to Vizag 2024 where the hosts will be out to convince the rest of the world that their facade is not in fact fraying and that they simply don't lose consecutive home Tests well not since 2012 anyway. But time is what it is and Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid now have to protect a proud record with a squad that has fewer Test runs. Joe Root and where Ravichandran Ashwin is both the highest wicket-taker and second-highest run and century maker. The captain-coach pair seek quick solutions while colliding head-on with a team that has spent the last 18 months running on an irresistible quantum of jeopardy and the last few weeks. Sweeping any rotating red spherical object out of sight. Lest it is lost in the afterglow it is worth remembering that India were still India in Hyderabad just a little less super-sharp. They led by 190 and had chances that they didn't take. In the end they were done for by what was in many ways a knock for the ages. It'll be interesting to see how they play in the follow up. Imitation however subtle will both be a hat-tip and an acknowledgement of shedding inhibitions. However should they lose the toss again and find the pitch to be similar India will ask for better control from their bowlers and more enterprise from their batters as well as the captain. For the second time in two years Rohit has been properly challenged at home with the marker for the series this time laid down very early. What happens next is a tantalising prospect. Both players are good against spin but Patidar might seem to be ahead in the pecking order by virtue of being called up to the squad earlier to replace Virat Kohli. India The hosts have several ways to go about making up for the double blow of losing KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja. It is certain that at least one of Rajat Patidar or Sarfaraz Khan will debut in the middle-order. The team management did their best to keep the identity and the number of debutants under wraps with both contenders batting even in the optional net session the day before the game. England Jack Leach will miss the Test with a knee injury and tall off-spinner Shoaib Bashir the visa issues behind him will replace him in the XI. James Anderson was at his menacing best in the nets two days out from the game and has been picked as the sole seamer in the XI in place of Mark Wood. What to expect: Spin but not of the extreme kind. Last time when India went down to England in Chennai they produced rank turners. But the absence of four all-time greats from the team might call for a more measured approach. This one is a black soil wicket with a smattering of dried grass to bind it. The two Tests played at this venue have been characterised by the slightly old-school subcontinental slow burn progression before culminating in fifth-day jeopardy which is how this one could also go unless the warmer temperatures aid faster disintegration. India's spirits are soaring sky-high after a stellar performance in Mohali led by Shivam Dube's scintillating 60 off 40 in the run chase and a crucial wicket in the first inning. Youngster Jitesh Sharma too added fireworks with the bat and stabilized the middle order and Rinku Singh helped India chase 158 and with Virat Kohli back in the pack for the rest of the series the team looks rock-solid and much more assured. Afghanistan though posted a decent total last time thanks to the ‘President’ Mohammad Nabi’s fantastic knock down the order. However the tourists missed the magic of Rashid Khan due to a back injury and that huge void was indeed felt. The hosts clinched the victory and now India’s eyes are set on sealing the series in Indore. The anticipation is through the roof and we're in for another exciting showdown! Also the good news for all the staunch cricket enthusiasts is that the two greats of the sport. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be together seen donning the Blues in the shortest format for the first time since the T20 World Cup 2022 Semi-Final. It is now time for the 2nd T20I between India and Afghanistan at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. India are already 1-0 up in the three-game series and will look to seal the series right away. It was a very chilly evening in Mohali last time around and on a stellar batting track Afghanistan put on a decent total which was well below par. The dynamic duo of Ibrahim Zadran and Gurbaz up top did get runs under. Their belt but neither looked convincing enough. Rohit Sharma the skipper of India says there's no particular reason to bowl first and that it's just the nature of the ground. He says that it's a chasing ground with pretty small boundaries. He's happy with the previous game and says that the guys are executing the plans being spoken to them. Says that they have asked for specific roles for the guys and they are doing accordingly so far. not much they don't have any baggage and it is all about backing them allowing them to be free on the ground. He says that they will do things keeping the World Cup in mind but adds that they they know results are also important. Further adds that they want to try out a few things but the end result also matters a lot and winning is more important than anything. There's a huge roar in the crowd as he says Virat Kohli is in the XI with Yashasvi Jaiswal in place of Tilak Varma and Shubman Gill. Ibrahim Zadran the captain of Afghanistan says that they will try to bat well and put a good score on the board. Adds that they also wanted to bowl first due to the conditions and the ground being a small one. Tells that they made some mistakes in the last game and they have discussed about it and will look to execute their plans better. Says that Rahmat Shah is not playing and Noor Ahmad comes in for him. Ends by saying that playing an extra spinner is a tactical decision considering the ground conditions. PITCH REPORT: Deep Dasgupta and Nick Knight are pitch side. Nick Knight says that it's pretty much flat and traditionally a very high-scoring venue and obviously the smaller boundaries are one of the reasons. Adds that the surface is really flat and cracks are firm. Adds that there won't be any turn maybe a bit of a little movement initially with the new ball. He says that the team who wins would look to bat under the lights and with the dew coming batting first will have an additional advantage. India won the toss and elected to bowl first. In the first full assignment of 2024 the Men in Blue welcome Afghanistan for a three-match T20I series. The Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium Mohali will host the series opener on Thursday (January 11). Adding full stop all the questions rumours the Indian fans are over the moon see Rohit T20I captain return along with the run-machine Kohli in the squad. However the Head Coach Rahul Dravid has confirmed that Kohli will miss the opening T20I due to personal reasons. India's very own Mr 360 Suryakumar Yadav who led the side in South Africa drew the three-match series 1-1 will miss this series and the entire domestic season due to an ankle injury following which he was diagnosed with sports hernia for which the stylish right-hander will soon undergo surgery. Hardik Pandya who is deemed as India's future captain has been in the headlines for the recent trade with Mumbai Indians (MI) and being named as the franchise's skipper for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) Season despite MI retaining Rohit Sharma will miss this series as the star all-rounder continues his recovery from an ankle injury he sustained in the ODI World Cup 2023. In addition to these the management has decided to rest Ravindra Jadeja Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj while Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan miss out as well. Hitman Rohit will be opening with young dasher Yashasvi Jaiswal with Ruturaj Gaikwad (finger injury) missing out. In the absence of Kohli Shubman Gill is the next best fit for the most important number three position. Tilak Varma Sanju Samson who is back in the T20I set-up after a long time and Rinku Singh will take care of the middle order. Samson's inclusion means Jitesh Sharma might not feature despite impressive performances recently. Arshdeep Singh Avesh Khan and Mukesh Kumar are the preferred three-man seam attack. Either Kuldeep Yadav or Ravi Bishnoi will partner with Axar Patel in the spin department. In what was a big blow to the tourists Rashid Khan the regular T20I skipper of Afghanistan who travelled with the squad to India has been ruled out of the series after failing to prove his fitness on the eve of the opening game. Rashid missed the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) due to lower-back surgery and also missed the recently concluded three-match T20I series against the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Ibrahim Zadran will lead the Afghan Atalans for the second consecutive series with a 2-1 win against UAE in the recently concluded assignment being the first. Mujeeb Ur Rahman after being rusticated from the Melbourne Renegades squad after a few games due to the cancellation of NOCs by the Afghanistan Cricket Board is back in the camp and will hold the key for the visitors in the absence of Rashid. Noor Ahmad Qais Ahmad Fazalhaq Farooqi and Naveen-ul-Haq are the rest of the known faces in the bowling department with the experienced Mohammad Nabi Karim Janat Azmatullah Omarzai and Gulbadin Naib are the all-rounders. Rahmat Shah Rahmanullah Gurbaz Najibullah Zadran and Zazai are the top batters who have been putting consistent performances for the touring party. Afghanistan in pursuit of its first win against India will come hard at the hosts with healthy IPL experience on its back. Can they spring a surprise on India and hinder their final leg of World Cup preparations? Rohit is set to join Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top of the order. And with Kohli unavailable in Mohali Shubman will take the No.3 spot. Samson might take the gloves after his century show in South Africa. It was an extraordinary day of Test match cricket as ball dominated the bat yesterday. India get the first-innings lead.
