Marcus Smart, NBA point guard for the Boston Celtics left Saturday's game against Los Angeles Lakers with a devastating left calf injury. Given the pop and mechanism of injury, many were worried about an Achilles tendon rupture. Gladly it was not! The team reported he likely suffered a calf strain and this was confirmed by MRI today. Marcus Smart suffered a grade 1 calf strain on his left side. We will also go over risk factors for an Achilles tendon rupture. Then I will proceed to review return to play and treatment for both an achilles tendon rupture and Grade 1/2/3 calf strains. From the video footage, Marcus likely tore his medial gastroc. Medial gastroc tears are the most common calf strain seen in patients.
