Goalweekly.com report below: (Written by Daniel Quinn) Northcote City stunned Victorian Premier League (VPL) winners Green Gully in the Mirabella Cup Semi Final at Olympic Village on Wednesday night with a 2-0 victory. Green Gully made three changes to their Victorian Premier League Grand Final winning side with Andy Vargas, Mat Sanders and Graham Hockless making way for Johnathan Munoz, Pasquale Vizzari and Turgut Fanoscu. Northcote put out a strong side which included goal machine Trent Rixon and Gold Medallist Jason Trifiro. The first-half started off slow with Hayden D'Agostino with the first chance sent well over and wide. On 18 minutes Northcote top scorer Trent Rixon put his left foot shot well wide like D'Agostino. Rixon played the big Target Man role with long balls sent up front for him to hold up the ball. Green Gully's first chance came on 26 minutes when Jimmy Rooney Medallist Stephen Downes put his shot into the side netting after great work by Joel Nikolic. Only three minutes later Downes had another chance to open the scoring with his right foot shot saved onto the post by Northcote Keeper Charles Treacey. Northcote opened the scoring on 36 minutes when Glen Trifiro's shot was saved by Gully Keeper and new Melbourne Heart signing Nikola Roganovic. However the ball fell for Trent Rixon to smash the ball home into the open net. Just before half-time both teams had half chances with Jonathan Voulgaris and Gully's Joel Nikolic both coming close to scoring. Gully coach Ian Dobson made two changes at half-time with Grand Final scorer Hamid Basma and Mathew Sanders coming on for Joel Nikolic and Cameron Drake. Jason Hayne replaced Turgut Fanoscu before half-time. Dobson's intentions where obvious, the players rested from the Grand Final were brought onto to find a winner. On 49 minutes Northcote Centre Back Adrian Chiappetta saved a Sander's header on the line after a great cross from Jason Hayne from the right wing. Downes had another chance on 55 minutes with a shot from the edge of the box saved by Northcote Keeper Treacey. On 66 minutes it was Northcote's chance on the counter with Trent Rixon putting a shot over after a great first time ball by Nicholas Curtis. Four minutes later Gully had another chance, this time through Daniel Jones whose header was directed straight at Treacey for a simple save. Northcote on 82 minutes were still trying to fight Gully off and finish them off when Rixon's great chest down and shot was put wide by Roganovic after pushing off the defence. RIxon again on 90 minutes had yet another shot saved after turning well in the opposition box. Gully were still in as the pumped balls forward looking for Basma and Hayne. However James Kalafatidis had a great chance to finish off on 91 minutes as his shot hit the post after he held off the Gully defence. On 94 minutes Northcote made a substitution where George Mc Heileh replaced Nick Tzoulis. Mc Heileh had an instant impact. Follow substitute Paul Savio did well to get through the Gully defence as he was closed down by the keeper, to pass it off to Mcheileh, who slotted it into an open net with his first touch. The Northcote fans went crazy as they were in the inaugural Mirabella Cup final.
