SLTV Vikings awarded Super League licence

The RFL today announced that Widnes Vikings have been awarded a Super League licence for the 2012 to 2014 seasons. The Vikings were deemed to have submitted the strongest application of the three clubs who applied for a licence and will take their place in Super League next year. Halifax, who also meet the minimum criteria for membership of the sport's premier competition, will now go forward to be assessed alongside the existing 14 Engage Super League clubs at the next stage of the licensing process which concludes in July. Barrow Raiders do not meet the minimum criteria and will not be awarded a Super League licence for 2012 to 2014. The club does not have a stadium with an operational capacity of 10,000, did not report a turnover of at least £1m in financial year ending 2009 or 2010 or record an average attendance of at least 2,500 in 2009 or 2010. RFL Chairman Richard Lewis offered his congratulations to Widnes Vikings and said he is confident the Cheshire club will enhance Super League by their presence. "On behalf of the RFL Board of Directors I would like to congratulate Widnes on their successful application and wish them all the best as they prepare to take the next step in their exciting journey," said Lewis. "Widnes have made significant strides in the last three years and their success today is testimony to a lot of hard work by their Chairman Steve O'Connor, his fellow directors and all the staff at Stobart Stadium Halton." The applications of all three clubs were assessed by the RFL Executive who worked with property consultants Savills and financial experts KPMG to produce a report which went before the RFL's independent Board of Directors last week. The clubs were assessed against the following minimum criteria: - Reached either a Championship Final or won the Northern Rail Cup in 2009 or 2010 - A stadium with an operational capacity of 10,000 - Turnover of at least £1m in financial year ending 2009 or 2010 (the turnover of the club's charitable foundation can be included in this figure) - An average attendance of at least 2,500 in 2009 or 2010. The 14 Engage Super League clubs have until close of business tomorrow (Friday April 1) to submit their applications for a licence renewal. Those applications will go through the same assessment process undergone by the applications of the three Co-operative Championship clubs. The RFL Board of Directors' decision on which clubs will join Widnes Vikings in Super League in 2012 will be announced on Tuesday July 26.
