UTPA Women's Basketball Pulls Away for Win Over Chicago State

At 9-9, the Broncs are now back at .500 overall while pushing the record over .500 at 3-2 in Western Athletic Conference play. Down 27-26 with 2:53 remaining in the first half, the Broncs went on a 16-0 run over the next 6:10 to pull away. The run started with a three-pointer by sophomore KaeLynn Boyd, and then junior Tonisha Walker scored seven-straight points on two free throws, a three-pointer and a layup. Junior Cherrell Price followed with a three, and then after junior Brittany Bush hit a free throw, freshman Shawnte' Goff made a jumper to cap the run with the Broncs up 42-27. Goff led the Broncs 18 points, four steals, three assists, two rebounds and one block. Junior Jasmine Thompson scored 10 points with seven rebounds and two steals. Bush finished with nine points and 12 rebounds. Tierra Williams led the Cougars (3-15, 0-5 WAC) with 20 points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal. Price and Goff hit threes and Bush hit a jumper as the Broncs scored the first eight points as part of a 14-4 run to start the game. Konner Harris hit a jumper to spark an 9-0 run as the Cougars scored the next eight points to pull within two, but the Broncs responded with a 9-3 run to push their lead back out to 23-15. The Cougars followed with a 9-0 run, capped by a Williams three-pointer to take their first lead at 24-23 with 4:19 remaining in the first half. The Broncs conclude this three-game home stand on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. when they host New Mexico State. With a win, the Broncs will tie for the best 19-game start in program history.
