Bitòn Coulibaly founded the Bambara Empire in what is now Mali's Ségou Region and Mopti Region. Great-grandson of former Ségou king Kaladian Coulibaly, Mamary Coulibaly settled in Ségou in his youth and soon became head of the Tòn, a voluntary organization for young men, taking the title of "Bitòn." Under Coulibaly's leadership, the Tòn transformed from an egalitarian society into an army of "Tondions." Prompted by popular up rise against the king of Ségou the populace suggested he takes over the leadership of the Bambara kingdom, Coulibaly quickly subdued rival chiefs of Ségou through a vote a cloture of the Chefs and used the city as a capital for his new Bambara Empire.

Only two of his works are known: a lost book on optics, entitled Optics, and an extant short treatise on siege machines, Construction of War Machines and Catapults (Ancient Greek: Κατασκευαὶ πολεμικω̑ν ὄργάνων καὶ καταπαλτικω̑ν).The military treatise is dedicated to a king named Attalus (Ancient Greek: Ἄτταλος), evidently a king of Pergamon, either Attalus I (241–197) or Attalus II (159–38). Some scholars have suggested, based on internal evidence, that the text should date to 156–55.Biton describes the construction of four non-torsion catapults.

The Royal Navy launched the first all-aircraft ship-to-ship naval attack in history, employing 21 Fairey Swordfish biplane torpedo bombers from the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious in the Mediterranean Sea.
