The Port Vale Player of the Year award is voted for annually by Port Vale's supporters in recognition of the best overall performance by an individual player throughout the football season. Towards the end of each season, fans are invited to cast their votes for this award.
The 2001–02 season was Port Vale's 90th season of football in the English Football League, and second successive season in the Second Division. On the pitch Vale finished in mid-table, whilst exiting both the FA Cup and the League Cup at the Second Round, and the League Trophy at the Area Quarter-finals.
The 2005–06 season was Port Vale's 94th season of football in the English Football League, and second successive season in League One. They finished in mid-table, and exited the League Cup at the First Round and the League Trophy at the Second Round.
The 2006–07 season was Port Vale's 95th season of football in the English Football League, and third successive season in League One. Martin Foyle's side again finished in mid-table, whilst exiting the FA Cup and the League Trophy at the Second Round.
The 2007–08 season was Port Vale's 96th season of football in the English Football League, and fourth successive season in League One. Vale finished second-from-bottom, and were relegated, some twelve points from safety.
The 2008–09 season was Port Vale's 97th season of football in the English Football League, and first season in League Two, following their relegation from League One. After a poor start to the season manager Lee Sinnott was sacked in September, and was replaced by Dean Glover.
The 2008–09 season was Port Vale's 98th season of football in the English Football League, and second successive season in League Two. Micky Adams received plaudits for his first full season in charge.
The 2010–11 season was Port Vale's 99th season of football in the English Football League, and third successive season in League Two. Vale enjoyed a solid start to the campaign, looking like good prospects for promotion.
